@JWC and @AfterTheFact have inspired me to pay it forward. I’m auctioning off a sample set of my custom Vesper Club chips on the large crown mold, to help @leo822 give the family he has been helping a nice holiday season: “Some of you know I've been helping out a local family the last couple months and now that they have a new home, I'd like to help them out this holiday with some of the never-ending things one needs when owning your first home.”

The Vesper Clubs were incredibly hard to bring to fruition, due to many factors, most importantly issues with hotstamping. I barely had any spares, let alone sample sets. This sample set will have slight stamping imperfections, but as I noted, I had precious few extra chips, so sample sets are rarer than hens teeth, and only a few sample sets exist. The full story about how this set came to be is here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...crown-hotstamped-cash-set.65515/#post-1302649

Bidding starts at $1.

Winner to PayPal @leo822, to be given to a family in need.

@leo822 Is there another post on the family you are helping? Possibly those of with not quite deep enough pockets to win this auction might still want to help with what you are doing?

Thanks for your question. This kind of blew up with the overwhelming generosity of the forum.

My wife met a mother of 4 at the local market who was having problems with using a coupon and my wife helped her out. They became very good friends, and she came around a lot to visit with her kids. I really enjoyed hanging with her kids and all of them are doing exceptionally well at school with the oldest getting a scholarship to the local private school here in Ann Arbor.

About 4 months ago she was showing my wife some pictures of the mold in their rented house and how no matter how much they cleaned it wouldn't go away. I saw the photos and knew right away this was a big issue. I told them they needed to get out of that house ASAP and when their lease was up a couple months ago they were able to secure a small loan for their first house. They asked the landlord if they could stay on a month by month basis until they found a new place and the landlord said sure...but the rent would be increased by by 60%! I got them in touch with a realtor friend who found them a great fixer upper just outside the city limits but with Ann Arbor schools so their taxes wouldn't be so bad. When they told the landlord they were leaving because of the mold the landlord said the mold was their fault because of all the "cooking" they do and that they are a family of 6 that probably showers too much. LOL wtf. They were a family of 6 when she rented to them so that shouldn't have been an issue...AND the cooking statement was just beyond. The landlord didn't want to return them their $2500 deposit because of the mold damage and so I advised them to call the city inspector to come look at the property. The City Housing Inspector came in and tested the air and a couple days later told them they had to leave that night as the house was uninhabitable with TOXIC MOLD! The landlord was super pissed and was told by the city she had to pay for a hotel for them until they could find new housing. After initially fighting it, she finally gave in renting them a hotel room in NOVI which is about 35 miles away from Ann Arbor. How the F were they going to commute to work and take the kids to school? I told them they were coming to stay with us, as its just my wife I, and it would be our pleasure to have them. Kids set up in my office on air mattresses and the parents stayed in the spare bedroom. They lived with us for about a month and while it was challenging sometimes in the morning (why do kids stomp so much?) everything went smoothly and to be honest it was a joy to do. Kids were so stoked to have a nice clean place to stay and a finished basement to hang out in. We had fun.

So, the whole thing is in court now and we come to find out the previous tenant had complained about the mold problem as well and the landlord said they would take care of it. Apparently using KILZ to cover up the mold and repaint over everything so the new tenants would not know was their solution. The sump pump was found to be faulty, and water just gathered in the crawlspace under the house eventually creating mold that ran up the inside of the walls. You can wipe it down with bleach all you want. If you don't remove the drywall and treat the studs, as well as eliminate the water issue, it's never going away.

The family moved into their new house a couple weeks ago and the father and I painted the entire inside of the house and replaced all the electrical and lighting. I donated the materials as most of that stuff is not too expensive but more labor intensive than anything. They have very little furniture, and the kitchen needs to be redone...but they are so happy it doesn't bother them. I figured I would sell some chips and use the money towards buying some Ikea furniture and maybe a dishwasher. People bid so generously on my chips and others like @AfterTheFact, @gopherblue, @PocketAces and @JWC even offered up their own chips for the cause. It really has rekindled my faith in humanity that has been tested sometimes these past couple of years I must say.

So, for anybody who wants to help I ask you this favor. My adopted family is one of the lucky ones who was able to get help. But there are SOOO many others who are less fortunate. As we spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars on chunks of clay for our amusement...take a step back and maybe buy one less rack of chips this year. one less expensive single or even one less buy in and use that money for something even more rewarding this year. You don't have to go searching for a cause because I guarantee you that the time will come, and you will know when, an opportunity will arise to help a fellow human being who just needs a lift. It's a call you won't regret making I promise you. :)

Thanks again for all the support. It means a lot.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

Thanks @leo822 for the excellent write-up, and for all that you have done for this lucky family. You are correct, sounds like you have this one under control and have made an excellent suggestion for the rest of us to seek out a local opportunity. There is so much more we could all do within our own communities. Even those who don't have much money to give can volunteer their time at shelters, food pantries and churches who help the needy.

I'm with you that this forum is a community filled with so many wonderful people. I'm thankful every day that I stumbled in here last year.

May God Bless each and every one of you. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a prosperous New Year to all!

Hopefully Michigan has decent landlord tenant laws and the family has good representation, perhaps from housing advocacy groups. This type of abuse is unacceptable.

Hope I lose.
