I'm looking for examples of vintage black inlay chips... you know, the ones with the white ring around them. I'm trying to convince myself that I need to create a custom set. I am familiar with a few, but would love to see which ones you can point me to. Post pics, I'll start.

... and of course there have been some great custom sets through the years with the vintage black inlays:

I am open on that. I'm liking the DiaSquare (MD-50), though the H-mold and the B-mold are near the top of the list. Don't want to discuss theme yet... an idea popped into my head this morning when a song came on the radio.

I love that Black Gold design!

Still looking for a fiver on the hub mold... :(

Three color 312... not a pattern that I generally prefer, but nice to know there are examples in the 1950's

Forgot about the non-TRK Mapes

Alright... here is what I'm working on... ignore the inlay... it won't be Flamingo... or Hamingo... but it will black, white ring, white artwork with a single color highlight.
Butterscotch = nickel or dime (probably hotstamp)
Lavender = 25c or 50c
Blue = $1
Gray = NCV for limit set... typically will be played as $1
Red = $5
Green = $25
Black = $100
Pink = $500 (not likely to be purchased... but wanted to have it in mind).

I tried to stay true to spots that were available in pre 1960. I deviated a little in the hundo.

I'm coming back to this thread to wallpaper it with images of entire sets... trying to get inspiration for color and spot pattern combos that existed in the 40's.

I love older Nevada chips from mostly the 30s through 60s time frame, but really love the 50's and 60's designs. I know the Chip Guide and probably the Chip Rack lists some of those Flamingo chips from the late '40's, but i think the H-mold are from 1950 and after. The reason i think that is there are a few articles I recall that state the HCE started distributing the H mold from 1950 until they sold the mold in 1968. Here is one- see link to HCE records on the Preserving Gaming History site:

http://www.preservinggaminghistory.com/hce/hce.htm

That doesn't mean that HCE chips were not from the late '40s, just that some of these dates may be inaccurate because of conflicting details like this. I believe that some of the dates on the Chip Guide/Chip Rack were probably logical guesses vs actual proof (eg. Mfg Records, Dated Catalogs, Dated Pictures). We may never really know for sure. I still think it is a cool project though.

The molds that are most associated with the 40's were primarily the Plain, Hub, Large Crown, Small Key, Diamond/Square and Zig Zag molds. There were others, but not as well used (dash/dots, wave, etc). As far as inserts, most chips were solids with very few having inserts. Most that i have seen are 214 and 314. I don't recall thinking anything more advanced like double inserts until the 50s. Also, a lot of the die cut chips were from the 40s.

More examples of this spot than just the "fancy" Flamingo.
Love these too. Here are a few that i have:
