Hi guys I’m new to this website I’m still learning so hopefully I’m using it right, apologies if I’m not. I need some advice from people who know more than me.

I’m starting a 1/2 private game and I just need some advice on if I should go straight to custom chips or start with a cheaper set from Amazon, any suggestions would be much appreciated. I have a bit of a tight budget so I didn’t really want to go straight for custom chips maybe just a higher end set from Amazon or whatever websites there is.

Cheers

Go straight to customs. BRPro is the best for ceramics. Tina ceramics are cheap, but they can become slippery fast. Classic Poker Chips is the only custom clay option. They are considered expensive for most people’s budget… and it can be around a year wait sometimes depending on the mold that you choose.

But honestly, skip all the BS and go straight to good quality customs. Your $1/$2 game deserves it.

Playing a $1/2 game regularly should require a decent amount of money. So going cheap on junk chips from Amazon doesn’t make much sense.

Custom ceramics from @BR Pro Poker will cost about $1/chip and are about the best option for a high quality custom chips on a budget.

A typical set for $1/2 is
Something like
200 $1
400 $5
100 $25
100 $100

I’d get another rack of $5’s and $25’s if it is in the budget.

Lots of options here. You can even go full custom and not break the bank

higher end set from amazon is a bit of a myth.

let us know what your budget is, what is max total buyins for your game and members here will be able to layout all your options.

What kind of budget do you have?

That will ultimately allow folks to give you recommendations.
£300/375$ is what I’d want to spend.

Buyins £100-£750 match the stack and I’d like to spend around £300/375$

My budget is around £300/375$ that would be slightly too much for me I think

I’m from the UK but thank you for that

I would spend the money. For a $1/2 game, just spend the couple of buy-ins on getting a custom or semi-custom set that secures your game. Especially when you have a few thousand on the table at any one point. BRPro, CPC, or Tina are all solid options depending on your preferences.

If you want custom chips and want to stick to your budget, the only option you really have are china cards mold ceramic chips.

Anything else in the custom chip world will cost you significantly more.

Search this forum for Tina and cards mold for more info on these chips.

In terms of chip set breakdown, there are also alot of threads discussing ideal denoms and breakdown of each denom. Suitable for the size of your game (number of players makes a difference as well) and capacity for growth.

People like to shit on cards mold chips, but they are still significantly better than anything you'll find on Amazon.

First of all, I welcome you to PCF. You are in the right place if you are looking for high end chips.

There’s a reason why higher end chip command higher pricing. Better CQ better durability better quality

With $300+ budget, you can only afford the low to middle-low end chips especially when you going to include shipping cost since you are from outside US

Either buy a cheap set with denominations and save up for more to get a quality set in the future or increase your budget and get a quality set now

Have you taken a look at what Apache currently has available?

Also maybe take a look at Hobbyphilic’s end of year chip reviews of lower-end chips, on YouTube.

I'd start mid-tier until you feel you really want better chips. Milanos hit the spot for me. I purchased a set of 1000 for about $400.
They're inexpensive enough to get them in high quantity but feel great compared to the cheap stuff you'll find on Amazon.

For a 1/2 game I'd have enough on hand for everyone to have at least a 150BB starting stack with enough left over for everyone to buy back in at 100BB.
Milano $1 chips are kind of tough to find for some reason, though.

Other great examples of Mid-tier chips, IMO, and all on ApachePokerChips.com, are:
Majestic Card Room
Pharoah's Poker Chips
Dune's Clay Poker Chips

A denomination breakdown per player might look something like $260 worth of $5 chips and 2 barrels of $1 chips

Unless you have an established game or like to spend thousands on sets for fun, my advice is to always play for a bit to see how the game runs… limper social games are different from LAG driven games are different from pro money-centric poker games. Ceramics are certainly a great place to start, as would be a live set from a local casino.

With your budget, I’d go straight to custom ceramics and buy a set that accommodates a number of different playing styles. Once you’re up and running you can dial it in and go for a nicer set.

For your budget, I'd honestly go with No Mold Tina's. As you play and get a feel for the game, your budget might increase and then you can go all in on a custom CPC set. Not going to lie. For the price, the Tina's are fantastic and hard to beat.

I suggest that you take a look at Tina’s cards mold, I prefer them over the No mold variant.

Suggested breakdown:
100-200 - $1
300-500 - $5
200 - $25
20 - $100

(More chips more fun)

Dont waste 400 on a statter set. Go with something for very little money, talk to the players come up with design ideas, get them invested: spend your money on a decent used table. You can be in the planning stages for chips for a long long time, just show up with potential designs and have them vote, every few weeks change it up lol.
