Hey all,

How patient would you be when trying to complete a set?

As a PCR fan, I was happy to grab The Kid's partial set just over 3 months ago and since then have been trying to complete it. I was confident at first but now I'm starting to worry...

I feel somewhat invested in this set now after paying a lot of cash for the $25s (the last new/retail ones sold on Earth, I believe) but I'm in desperate need of some hundos or this tourney set is kind of useless.

I have:

200x NCV grey
100x $1000 (new)
20x $1000 (old - love these!)
150x $500 (new)
100x $500 (old)
75x $100
100x $25
Various NCV to be bounty or $5k chips (not all pictured)

Full set as it stands - as you can see, very random chip counts due to grabbing what I can find!

I'm wondering if I just downsize the whole set to something like this?

Or downsize even more to really simplify things and shift my focus to a custom set?

Purple or pink $500s?

I'm thinking with the last set, I can use the grey chips as $5s. Otherwise, I planned for them to be $50s to fill the gap in the $100 space. Or perhaps the greys are my hundos (for now). That would hurt though because these $100s are one of my all time fav chips and I really want to see them in action!!!

I can only seat 8 players and we don't tend to do re-buys. For larger tourneys, I have two full birdcages of Pharaoh's ready to go so this set being smaller does not really matter.

Honest truth is; I'm starting to give up, unfortunately. I sense these may all be listed for sale soon to allow my focus to shift towards CPC designs.

What would you do?

Jezza.

Watch out for conflict of interest in some of the upcoming posts... ;)

ROFL yeah I'm expecting a bit of that! :P

I should note - part of the reason I'm thinking about selling up is because I've realised the cost of these is starting to creep up to that of a custom set so it would make sense to go custom instead.

I would continue with the search. Customs are nice but won't be Paulson and may not keep their value as well. The only drawback I forsee is that the needed chips will come up for sale as part of a larger set that has to be bought at once.

That's another concern! Being prepared to pay hundreds more for a complete set and then to sell off the surplus (by the rack/barrel) o_O

What would be amazing is if someone out there who maybe has a couple of extra racks of $100s may want to trade for some of what I've got. I've had the feelers out for a while though and no bites at all.

I have waited a year or longer to complete a set. I just keep on hoping everyday when I look for them that they will show up.

Most of the time they do....

I would go this route:

*Except* I wouldn't downsize too much else, I would only get rid of one of the $500 colors (either pink or purple). Use the greys as $5s for the time being (makes for a good set for 8-10 people with starting stacks from T1k to T5k) and keep all the "extra" higher denoms. That way you have a serviceable set for your game now, and when you find more $100s (and some more $25s), you'll be able to ditch the greys and move up to the more traditional tourney starting stacks.

I personally love the purple version of the $500s, so I would try to sell the 150 pinks, then hold onto the rest (including the $1ks - the two different versions have the same yellow base color, so in a pinch you could use them together).

My 2¢ worth.

Building a set of chips that are in high demand (or low supply) takes time, patience, and usually a fair bit of luck. If you don't have all three (or at least the first two), I'd give it up and go custom. Three months of looking is nothing, sometimes worthwhile chip projects take years to complete.

Of course, the politically correct answer is to keep building this set ~and~ go ahead with your custom set design. There is no such thing as too many sets.

Side note: I have no idea what you mean when you use the word 'downsize' in relation to chips.

Thanks for the input, guys. Perhaps I'll hold onto them and hope!

I like your idea, Irish and I realised later I would definitely keep the full rack of $500s and $1000s so I'm ready to "chip-up" as the blinds increase and people drop out.

Hey, what do you guys think of this as a T10000 ($25/50) starting stack? (greys as $50). Would it work?

(I've actually got 28x of those $1000s so for my 8 player game, it works)

I would definitely give it more time. It took me years to get my current set to a playable level. What worked for me was a bought a set of CC Pharaohs to use while I was building my "real" set. This allowed me to justify the long wait to get exactly what I really wanted. And now I have a nice travel set in the Pharaohs to boot.
