What's a no-go for chip nerds? (2 Viewers)

Honestly, I could live with all of those things if the game and the company were good.

A few years back there was a group that played semi-regular tournaments. Non of them were really poker players and the game reflected it - no sensible structure, rules made up on the fly, and winner take all, regardless of how many players were playing. That shit was a "nope" for me.

Assholes, and people that won’t take advice on improvement.

Attended a game last winter, guy was trying to get a regular game going. He had paper cards “from a casino” and laser holographic slugged chips. I brought a set of IG and a setup of plastic cards to the next game. He looked at them, and while I was fixing my drink set them aside and counted out his chips and used his cards. I played that night but never went back. Fucker didn’t even provide any food or drinks but he wanted to rake the game. It only ran the two times.

Mostly, if they don't know basic rules and poker etiquette, and don't care. I can deal with dice chips and paper cards.

IG?

That kind of ego, "Fragile M" I believe it's called, prints money for thinking players.

Bet I'm not playing in this d-bags raked home game with paper cards though.

Would you play in a game with dice chips?

Slugged ABS?

Paper novelty cards?

What is your non negotiable?
The listed items are all o.k. as a player. After years of playing and hosting, I am primarily concerned with Environment. This is comprised of Safety and Cleanliness. I want a non cheated game, Security or access to security, Safe parking, Safe everything.

I want the cash (buy-ins) nearby or easily accessible and safe , I don't take IOU's and I don't play under the assumption the players or hosts will settle-up next game. I want clean facilities to use, I need to know if food or drink be provided or will I be able to bring my own beverages and food if needed (ability to order uber eats tor delivery if food is not provided) it does not have to be comp'ed, I often bring my own as needed. (Managing my expectations)

I need to know who is property owner, what jurisdiction the game is being held (is poker legal or illegal in the location, etc.)

Is the game Raked, if so how much, or is a table time fee required for the game. (My hosted games are free)

I prefer non cigarette smoking at the table - take it outdoors if allowed. I enjoy cigar smoking if allowed (Flame me for not being consistent with Smoking) which is why I attend one specific game for Cigar Smokers.

Knowledge of the other players anticipated in the game, names, who can vouch for them, etc.

After looking at my personal check list, I guess my Non Negotiable is Information & Answers along with being around people that are enjoyable.

Like most have mentioned... what makes poker games unplayable is certain types of people. Really drunk people are unbelievably annoying to me anymore (though I have been that guy a long time ago). People who just cannot for the life of them pay attention and need prodded every time the action is on them. Overly serious sore lovers who can't handle the new player sucking out on them with cards they never should have called with. And..... assholes....i really don't enjoy playing with assholes.

If you play on a regular table, there must be some sort of carpet on it, a topper.
You can‘t pick up the cards on a blank table, and the soft ground is way more card friendly.

Crappy uncomfy chairs are a no-go too imo.

These two equipment items should be ok, the rest is more personal preferences.

To answer the original question- about being a chip nerd, I dislike chips that do not have denominations on them. As we get older, we have our preferences, this is one of them.

If the game is good - I will most likely put up with almost anything, but it is like a cost benefit analysis, as the dislikes add up for me, the profitability must increase as well.

Like most others, I prefer bendable (plastic) cards, good felt, good chips, good company, but those are always weighed against the enjoyment and profitability of the game. I have 4 regular games a week, each in a different location, one of which I host. This regular schedule makes me a little set in my ways.

Sometimes a new game will sprout up every now and then, but my many questions I ask before the game indicates how well my needs will be meet, thus, how likely I will enjoy the game.

As someone who loves playing in a local game with paper cards and shitty dice chips, I can deal with pretty much anything if it gets the right players together. I don't care much about their old man slowrolls or anything but they get annoyed when I try to follow the action for them, they splash the pot every bet and make change on the fly, and then are flabbergasted that no one knows what's going on or who's bet it is. Raises can be for any amount ("I see yer $4, and I make it $5!"), betting is always no-limit, and its 50c/50c with a $50 buyin and rebuys go to players at the table, buying chips from their stack and the cash leaves the table. Very odd setup!

I can do it once a month cause its a lot of fun to play in, but as others said, all about attitudes. If they were grumpier I wouldn't make it back, but I make good money there and the environment is great. I can put up with breaches of culture/etiquette from those who have been playing their own way for decades, but I wouldn't bother if it wasn't fun. The worst part is one of the old old players plays a little game where he's always the last one to ante and pretends to forget. Goes on for 4 hours and he thinks its great, host doesn't mind so I bite my tongue.

Same here ( happy to be playing)

But wow do those plastic dice chips make me uncomfortable

Aside from the already stated playing with ass-holes, etc.

Sloppy dealing drives me nuts. If you’re going to play, learn to deal and just keep it simple. Check the pot is right before turning the next card. Fckrs that try and turn all the flop cards at the same time, or deal the turn or river in advance get on my last nerve.

Especially, when you’ve been waiting all night for the hand to stack the Uber Agro player, hit the monster, and the moron sloppy dealer flips the turn/river early.

Keep the cards in the deck until it’s time to deal them, check action is complete before you deal and turn over the card.

No Limit you say, All my hosted games are no limit, and at a few of my regular stops. If you are in my area, I will extend and invite. Our buy-in is a little over $50. Our blinds were $1/2 NL, but with the recently up'ed it to $5/5. It is mostly "old guys" but they are the ones that usually have the disposable income to regularly play, but this crew - no slow rolls, just the same old stories over and over again. (Time will tell how long the 5/5 will last)

Some of the Game Plaques we use.

You play $5/$5 with a $50 buy-in?

Nice! This was the first table I saw them spreading 7stud NL. I can very comfortably play $1/2 but if we're in $5/5 territory I'll just bartend lol, I'm not rolled for that.

Love the old stories, never complain about that; didn't mean to insult the oldies, but these are old friends who don't know the etiquette and rarely go to casinos, so their etiquette is just a mix of house rules they've developed.
