Hello, I am new here and also to all this poker chip talk. Can anyone break down on what I need to know to buy awesome custom chips like the ones I see in 90% of the posts in poker pron section? Looking to own some custom set both cash and tournament!

Thanks

Welcome to PCF! First on the agenda would be to supply some information, needed to direct you to resources that will help you in your quest:

In what type of game will the chips be used? Cash game or tournament? Number of players? If cash, typical stakes and buy-in amounts?

What is your budget for a chip set?

Answering those questions will provide insight on 1) how many total chips are needed, 2) the denominations most likely needed, and 3) the type of chips your budget will cover.

Regardless of the answers, your second step will be to get samples, so that you can determine what type of chips you like before you commit to a large purchase.

Enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the fast reply.

I am looking for both, a set for cash game and a set for tournament play. I would like recommendations for the follow games, 1/2, 2/5, 5/10 cash games and tournaments up to 50 players. All predicting it being max players. Looking no more than 2K per set. I would want a design to make it custom, maybe logo + club name/location, and denominations on it. I like kinds of chip that are able to stack nicely, have a nice sound to it when playing with, and feels good like majority of chips. Most of all, the edges need to be well made and not scrape your hands when you are playing with them.

I would start by getting samples from here:

Your budget should be able to handle either custom 'clay' chips or custom 'ceramic' chips. Get samples of each, and decide which you prefer.

Ordered all sample set of everything.
Do you know which ones are most popular for the molds? and color for the tournament chips? I kinda have an idea of the colors I want for the cash game chips. (White for 1s, Red for 5s, Green for 25s, black for 100s and maybe something for a few 500s). Normally when we place an order, there is an option for both edge spots and mold? How do you choose how many edge spots and what not? What about other customizations like color in the center or more than 1 color like half/half on some chip sets I see?

Good move.

Do you know which ones are most popular for the molds?
Popularity really varies, since each mold has different sound/feel/performance characteristics (and different people prefer different characteristics). The A-mold is CPC's biggest seller. A lot of people prefer the diasqr mold. YMMV.

and color for the tournament chips?
The 'standard' colors for tournament chips are 5-red, 25-green, 100-black, 500-purple, 1000-yellow/orange, and 5000-gray/pink.

Those are fairly common colors for those denominations.

Check out the Chip Design Tool - there is a link at the top of this page.

After playing around in the Chip Design Tool for awhile, start a 'help me design my set' thread, and you'll get plenty of experienced advice.

What about other customizations like color in the center or more than 1 color like half/half on some chip sets I see?
Most people utilize a professional chip designer/artist to help with their custom artwork. There a several great ones who hang out here at PCF.

Yes, chip security is very important hence i am in a market for a custom set :P

Thanks for the answer, i will wait for the samples to come in before making a next move :)

Let us know what you select.

Will sure do. Atm, having many brain farts and am hesistant, way more harder due to the endless possibilities of designs.. going to take my time with samples and more studying first. Don't think I can make something now that I'll love more than any of the sets I see being posted everywhere ;( Last thing I want to do is put in a custom order and not love it
