I have been looking at ordering chips, probably something from Apache. I received a sample set from them and the one Majestic Star chip doesn't look to be in horrible condition. It stands on edge even. So why are they selling them so cheap compared to other Paulsons? Did I just happen to get a good one but the bulk of them will be bicycle tires? Or are there a gazillion of these in circulation bringing the value down?

Anyone have some insight?

I have a sample set of the Majestic Stars. There are 4 versions of the $5 and 2 versions of the $25. 2 of the $5's and one of the $25's have significant wear.

The lower prices were for a number of reasons.
They were offered originally from a ChipRoom sale of many, many chips acquired from the casino. So there were a lot of them offered. Second, the condition was more worn than most of their other offerings, so they were sold at a very good price.
The chips were also offered at a time when there were many other casino sets available. Folks around here had lots of Paulson choices for great prices.
Lastly, the chips are RHC which are not as desirable among many set collectors.

In short, the demand is less than the large supply on the Majestics as opposed to some other casino Paulsons.

Condition was pretty heavily used. Inlays were variable. Original sale price was very low from TCR so basically they have next to no resale value. A new member can buy other newer Paulsons from TCR for only a little more. Tina ceramics chips are also at a similar price point.

“Blaze” 1ks sell for $7/chip the lowest of all blaze 43mm 1ks.

Yikes!!

A picture is worth a thousand words. The chip they sent me was a $25 that looks to be about the same as your good one. The varying designs wouldn't bother me as I would just overlay my own design over them but if they're gonna be as worn as those I'll have to look elsewhere. Thanks for taking the time to post the pics!

I have 2 NCV majestic star 36mm sets. one marketed by TCR as the low limit set is fantastic with great colours. Second larger set are much more used/worn especially the 25/100 value chips. I chose to build a large 10 table set of out these given the low cost. Also since I bought so many there are not many out there with others of the set so they are almost exclusive.

Worn chips of uneven dimensions so stacks do not equal side by side. These are to me the main detractors with the majestic star cash chips. On the plus side they are leaded chis which can feel nice but are very worn due to use. If stacking barrels wide by side to compare value vs counting each chip individually is your thing then majestic stars may not be for you. I like the colors and would have bought a set to have a consistent cash to tourney theme of the same casino however the poor condition made me avoid the cash chips specifically. I have a large primary HSI set (mostly used) that is in remarkably better condition. All the chips stack equally in barrels of 20 so no discrepancy on height resulting in easy counting and stack comparisons.

I really like them for the price. I bought twice as many as I needed and put together a set of matched types for a travel set. I offered the remaining chips at a good discount but when I thought about how little I was selling them for I just made another matched set. So instead of one traveling set, I just keep one remote set in STL and one in SEA. The red 5's may be bike tires but they are heavy and feel great in the hand.

I found the 1s to be very useable. The 100/500s are pretty good.

The 5s and 25s are a little bit of a wreck.

thanks for all the pics! ... Yeah, I'll definitely be looking elsewhere for my first set

Why are they so cheap? Have you ever heard the phrase "bicycle tires"?
So these would be best to go with Bicycle cards yeah? :wtf:  :ROFLMAO:

Around here, we pay a premium for lead.
We had a guy nicknamed "chips" where I used to work ..... not for being a chipper or gambler but for all the lead paint chips he must have eaten as a toddler. Nicest guy in the world but man was he dense!

I would take clay bicycle tires over cheap china every time. And don't misunderstand me. I like some of the china clay chips, no problems. I'm just saying, everyone seems to want top quality and they overlook worn chips which still are great chips. So what if they stack more than 20 to a barrel. So what if the colors are faded, the edges are rounded. Take a look at your sad ass at 50 years old, but we still keep you around.

If I remember correct, there was a switch of casino rack from pri to sec during covid and at the end the secondary chips were destroyed and the primary rack that was on the tables since forever ended up in Jim's warehouse.

I had some racks of uncirculated hundos...those were as close to the perfect RHC hundo as you can find (chip wise, the inlay is horrible)

To add to the other great posts above me that grand opening is fire, but the rest of the colors are pretty bland on the spectrum. I’m not into ice cream and candy colors, but these are a little drab if I had to pick a custom set. However, they are Paulson and that alone makes them super super cool rare collectible, and I want them alllllll!!! Don’t get it twisted.

I loved my Majestic Star set. I loved that bear claw 100$ with hot pink stripe.
I played at Majestic Star casino back in 2015 during my USA trip, so the set had a meaning (it was my first set from a casino where I actually have been gambling)
but...
it was toooo worn. Only good chips were 500$ and 1000$, maybe 10th 25$ and a few Bacc Room 5$.
I bought better (new-ish) chips and finally sold the Majestic Star set. With much regret, but it was useless to me.
Just kept a full sample set as "memento"

It’s not just bike tires. There’s many bad ass molds out there that get slept on. And don’t get me wrong either, you can’t go wrong bringing in a set of Tina’s; quick 5 rack cash set (we plaque for high denoms) or a tourney set and you can do so on the cheap.

But while people are adding set after set of China clays, same chip different labeled mold, there’s racks and racks of great chips that hardly see the light of day sitting in peoples chests and poker closets. Don’t get me going on the THC, RCP, IOC, and Tiger crowd. Love them like I love my own crew but while they’re chasing and spending, they’re also perpetuating the myth that overslept molds and bike tires are taboo.

Rack at a time build something. Mix molds even (my specialty) who GTAF?

There, now if you don’t own a rescued set of some worn out, thin, faded chips or a few racks of a brick of a forgotten mold, you’re doing the purity of the past time a disservice.

What? Get going!

They weren’t useless. They played. You just yet to fully realize what takes a lot of us some time to realize; understanding that while chips are really just chips (a means to the end of wagering on poker) and we’re going to have preferences (hell, it’s your money), there’s more to the affliction than having what the other kids have and doing what the other kids do.

It’s akin to going to the pound and adopting some 9 year old dog that takes a daily pill or needs a special diet.

The universe is a better place when we do.

Useless because I bought new and better set

Fair enough. I spread a weekly and one of the questions I get every week from most of the lineup is “Which set you running this week Skip?”

I don’t want to dispute it, many know I’m an ambassador of sorts, but new (indisputable) is static whereas “better” is definitely subjective.

My point being I wish all of us well and just wanted to espouse on the merits of bike tires and forgotten molds and how I think building a mixed set or saving chips from never seeing the light of day is yet another dimension to this thing we do.

All the best. If you ever get to MN visit The Godfather Club. You get to pick the set we roll.
