I also don’t collect any chips just to collect them, only for play. So that’s a factor in my decision. Even if I rotate chips every game night, anything more than 3 tourney and 3 cash sets would be silly. Really two and two is plenty.

Still for me it has been hard to resist building more sets, until the pandemic brought me down yo earth. Initially the lack of games drove me deeper into chipping, but that wore off after a few months.

Just kidding around @philhut , but if were to have to sell my chipsets, I’d keep samples. They are just cool!

Fair, I will be reselling a Indiana Grand sample set in the future that is (still in the mail....). Samples unless they are extra's for losses for a full set are just that to me and if I didn't buy the set then like paint chips and carpet samples are not worth keeping. If I sold a set I'd sell everything, samples left over would just be a reminder of what I had and likely would never have again.

I am not a collector of chips though other than buying some nice sets to play, I don't attribute the value that others do to particular single/small lots of chips. Nothing wrong with doing so that is just me.

This is very good self awareness on self imposed limits. Chipping can get expensive so we tend to put a cap on how much we want to put into it. Hard to speak on this as everyone has their own bar set for it, but I have definitely found that my bar has slowly slid higher and higher. It used to be 3-4 good sets is way more than enough, but now I'm sitting at 8 cash sets. I still don't want to sell any, and two of the sets aren't fully complete yet as they are custom builds/relabel projects as well. I'm still experimenting with the lineup, getting the labels removed and waiting on new labels. I told myself once those are done I'm happy to turn off classified notifications but I bought a new BCC set the other week too so not sure how much water that statement really holds. I'm enjoying it though and plan to eventually rotate all the sets in and out of play over the years.

The more I host, the more I realize that I don’t need multiple sets that do the same things.

The key is to have each set do something different.

For me, the sets are...

• Zombie Ceramic Tournament - For ladies night or players brand new to poker. Lots of small denoms, deep stacked, and slow level progression to give even a rookie player an hour or two before being felted.
• Zombie CPC Tournament - Enough to cover up to 36 players, and high in the rotation.
• Zombie Hall of Fame Tournament- for Hall of Fame night and Hall of Fame voting, as well as medium rotation. Different blind levels compared to the CPC set.
• Zombie World Edition Tournament - High denom with plaques. Up to 1000 BB to start, but an average jump of 79% each level. Starts like a cash game, ends like a tournament, so you have to stay on your toes and make adjustments. It also uses a top-heavy pay structure and pays fewer position that the other tournament sets.
• Zombie Cash - Low buy-in cash games. Includes 5¢ chips.
• Martini Lounge Tournament - A set that uses a Big Blind Ante. Mind you, I hate the BBA, but it is a reality in the casino world, so to completely ignore it is doing yourself a disservice.
• Empress Star Secondary Tournament - For mimicking a structure used in a casino (usually a poor structure, but again, if that is what casinos do, you should be ready).
• Aviation Club Tournament/Cash - for the airplane seat-tray poker table. Chips are easy to replace, because if a chip falls on a floor, there's really not enough room to try to get it back.
• Empress Star Cash - For $50-$100 buy-ins.
• Desert Palms - Limit Set
• Lucky Derby - OFCP set
• Matsui Zen - Heads-up tournaments
• Milano's - A loaner set, or if I'm invited somewhere and the host is using non-denominated dice chips. Call it an intro to better chips.
• Pacific Star Cash - Used for Survivor-style tournaments, where players get paid the amount that they have in chips, once the bubble breaks.
• TRK L-Crown Starburst - These I just need to sell. I simply don't like starbursts after-all, and my TRK love has faded.

So you see, each set has a different use

My biggest debate is about four (count ’em, four) unfinished sets — one spotted THC, one RHC, one THC solids, one H-mold. All in the 900-1,200 chip range. I have acquired 90% of what I need for these, it’s mainly just milling/murder/overlabeling to do. Been fiddling with designs too long.

I could just sell these off, plus random racks/barrels, and still have three large playable sets that I really like to keep for my games... Just not sure if I’m ready to give up on the dream of each custom set.

Just so long as you finish (and keep!) the Hoyle Road set. That set is insane.

It’s interesting to me that you tie hosting to collecting - that the more you host, the more chips you’ll want. For me, it’s the opposite. The more I host, the more I realize that I don’t need multiple sets that do the same things.

+1 for not owning things you don't use.

@Taghkanic, if I were in your position, I'd probably sell off the excess with a caveat that anyone who buys them must give you first right of refusal at cost should they ever decide to sell them. That way you have a chance of reacquiring them in the future if you regret it.

It’s a creative and tempting idea, but I would neither want to saddle a buyer with post-sale conditions nor attempt to police their future sales to ensure the terms were met. Once they’re sold, they’re sold.

At one point I thinned the herd down to two sets. I sold a few sets I told myself I'd never sell. After said and done I don't regret anything.

I've since added three more sets two of which being customs though. So maybe that doesn't really help out.

I will say it's always shocked me on here, the number of people who have large collections who don't actually have a regular or semi regular game.

Anytime my closet starts getting over 5k chips or so, I start feeling the urge to sell - there are just racks/chips that are never going to see the felt. No regrets about anything I've sold (closest would be when I sold the LCOs I had).

So, just to catch up on this, I am in the process of re-inventorying everything so that I have a better picture of what I really have. Probably will start with getting rid of the strays (extra barrels/racks, stuff I’ve decided doesn’t fit) then reassess again. Thanks all for the thoughts.

I’m sitting here debating whether to seriously pare down my collection, which has grown to maybe 10,000 chips. I suspect some other lapsed hosts may be having the same debate. Here’s my situation:

Over the past 2.5 years, I have gone from hosting twice a month to hosting exactly two games in that span.

One was held after the first wave of vaccinations gave everyone false hope that we were reaching the end of the pandemic. The other was this winter before the Omicron variant caused another surge.

I am sure that I will get back to hosting regularly. My roster of players is very eager to get back into the swing of things, as am I.

But not hosting for so long has gotten me out of the habit of feeling like I should be constantly upgrading my existing sets, and/or creating new additional sets for variety. I haven’t bought nearly as many chips over the past 2.5 years, and don’t check the classifieds and auctions nearly as often.

So I guess you could say that COVID broke my chipping addiction. I now look at all my chips and think, “You know, realistically I don’t really need more than one cash set and one tournament set. OK, maybe also one other flexible set which can serve as either.”

So now I’m eyeballing both my excess playable sets, my several incomplete projects, not to mention the various random barrels and racks that I acquired on impulse over the years… and thinking of doing some “mega” sales. I’d probably do one RHC sale, one THC sale, and one miscellaneous sale by the end of the summer.

But then the old addiction kicks in and I think, “You know, if you sell these, you’ll never be able to buy them back at a reasonable price again. Once the regular game start up again you’ll wish you had these chips.”

Part of me is just venting and thinking out loud here. I don’t have any monetary pressure to sell; but I also really don’t need so many chips… And I’m sure I’m not the only one contemplating whether to streamline or not. I’d be interested to hear others’ thoughts, especially from those who have sold large parts in their collection before. Have you regretted it? Or did you just pocket the cash and never look back?

Probably, but 10k is a lot of chips, help some of the community out with barrels you don't use or enjoy looking at often, does it spark joy?

I do have a few different poker sets... but I also have a decent collection of excellent-to-mint condition CDI 98s. I recently did a survey of selling prices here on PCF and Fleabay. Based upon this, I am seriously considering auctioning some of my CDI 98 set to help pay for my daughters graduate school. However, I know that if I do this I will regret it since they are unobtainium.

I'm for the moment torn by this feeling "the seller remorse".

In fact, for my tournament set, I just received my custom hotstamp from CPC and love it so much.
Because of that, I'm resurrecting an idea that I always had in my head : doing a CPC re-creation of the "The Post" chips with my own stamp.

The Post chips have always been my favourite. The unconventional colors is so nice with a yellow $1 and a black $5.
But the best I could get is this 6-max mixed set :

And I'll probably never be able to put a set together since the owners of The Post chips love them too.
But on the other hand, with the Silver Star chips, this set looks very nice.

My breakdown is also not perfect (even though largely playable). Ideally, I'd need 1 or (better) 2 barrels of The Post $5. Almost mission impossible.
The other The Post owners are very nice guys and I'd definitely be happy to help them improve their breakdown (they are also in need of extra $5 and don't have any of these rare dimes). So that would definitely lower my seller's remorse too if I know my chips would be used as they should.

Last but not least, I always considered these Silver Star as a temporary solution before finding the The Post denoms but also as a trade-bait if they would appear at some point. Considering them as trade-bait prevents me from playing with the set as I would like. This is why I created a ceramic tribute of The Post, to have a set I never hesitate to put into play. SunFly PolyClay are fine, CPC are in another league.

Having already a full sample of the The Post and a Silver Star sample (this one on its way) would also make my decision to let go my 2 incomplete sets (that still make a nice mixed set together) less difficult.

So long story short, the idea of selling my mixed set to build a CPC version of the The Post (with a breakdown that perfectly fits my needs) is growing but I can also already feel the seller remorse.
