All the local poker rooms around me are generally 100bb max buy in. Now the strategy that I developed around this was to play less suited connectors and marginal hands and more double broad way hands. I also completely nit fold all pocket pairs from 22-77's due to the effective stack depth not usually being high enough to call for a profitable set mine. With the capped buy in what strategy do you guys use? I've heard 3-bet or fold is extremely effective in general poker games but how would you 3-bet in such a shallow game if you're committing a decent amount of your stack or other shorter stacks?

That’s not bad compared to a local casino here in SoCal. A 1/2 with a $100 cap buy in lol. Generally it’s just a shove fest. I’m definitely not an expert by any means, but essentially; you’re right. Later positions and/or on the button be very aggressive with strong hands, more so than usual.

Have you played these rooms much? Are they generally a shove fest?

I'm only in my first year of playing poker, I've logged around 15 sessions at maybe 50 hours and unfortunately 1/3 is very taxing on my bank roll which is why I have limited hours in these games. I didn't notice much of a shove fest as the demographic was more sticky and call heavy. I usually have a problem with confidence to bluff in certain spots without a made hand. I usually assume they have something if they're betting which in turn makes me over fold to any aggression. The game also has a massive problem with OMC's and people never top up back to a full stack, if they face a beat they rather dust their entire stack before rebuying...

Poket pairs can be highly profitable if you're given the right circumstances. Late position you can over limp some of the time if you don't anticipate being squeezed from the blinds. If you can set mine pocket pairs for cheap then they're worth putting money into the pot pre flop to see a flop. If you're in a 3bet pot it's different, especially OOP, but I wouldn't auto fold 77-22 depending on table dynamics.

AQs+/88+ kinda thing from UTG. Just generally TAG play. Tighten up the range preflop and play aggressive afterwards. And tailor your play to the player— if they’re tight, 3bet em with a wider range and the inverse if they’re loose.
I like your reasoning about 22-77, the implied odds are reduced at this level, though if you can see a cheap flop in a multiway pot it may be worth it.

Yeah, I wouldn't cut 22-77 out of your ranges entirely, especially from LP. Just because the buy in is 100bb max doesn't mean there won't be people at the table with 200+ that may give you the implied odds necessary for set mining. Just have to pay attention to who's left in the hand and what their stacks are. And you only need 7ish:1 pot odds to call hoping to hit a set on the flop, if it's a real limp fest and you see a lot of family pots that'll do it right there.

yeah, agree with what @demonnic said. i don't know about you guys, but i consider 100bb to be fairly deep, especially when considering that there will be some people at the table with 150-200 if they win a few hands.

Sorry, I didn't mean entirely cut it out of my range, if I can limp in and have a good feeling players to my left won't squeeze I'd definitely peel a flop. But when it comes to facing any aggression I tend to over fold them.

No expert, but isnt the stack depth more important / restrictive for suited connectors and small suited aces? I think with these hands you need min 20 spr while small pairs more like 8 spr? I could be wrong though.
