Morning all!

An interesting spot presented itself at a mixed game this weekend and am curious about your thoughts.

We were playing a ‘Hole Em’ variant of a game we call Squid Game. This is a 3 board game with a twist. The lowest river card wipes the entire board. If two rivers match as the lowest they’re both eliminated. If three rivers match they’re all eliminated and you play hole cards vs hole cards for the strongest hand and single pot.

Generally we play for (2) pots the highest high between all standing boards and the lowest low (8 or lower to qualify) between all standing boards. If no low then the highest hand receives the full pot. It is possible that both pots be won off the same board despite 2 boards being playable.

Historically we play this as an Omaha game (4 or 5 card) but this weekend had too many players while playing dealers choice so opted for a 2 card Hold Em variant.

Each river came an Ace which created excitement as we all thought the final board was a guaranteed elimination after the 1st and 2nd boards Aces.

After expressing audible excitement from the group a player not in the hand asked if we would be using 5 card hand rankings or 2 card hand rankings. When pressed they stated that a 5(c) 6(h) would be a straight or A(d)7(d) would be an Ace high flush… house ruled 5 card rankings would be in effect.

Has anyone heard of 2 card hand rankings? Or have situation/implementation examples?

brings me back to my college 2-card guts days.

normal 2-card poker is just pair -> high card.

but we argued incessantly and changed the rules multiple times. by the end we settled on straight flush -> pair -> flush -> high card and straights didn't count.

Wouldn’t a 2 card hand ranking just be the pai gow low?
Best hand you can get is a pair, worst hand you can get is a high card

Ok, after reading again I'm getting what you're talking about. In the Derailment we play if the low card hits all the boards then they ALL play, none are eliminated. Yeah, you kind of have a screwed game when you only have 2 hole cards playing against each other.

Just high hand and pairs. Think of it this way: in holdem, you're more likely to get suited cards than a pocket pair. Why should a two card flush be stronger than a pair? You will have to mess with the traditional poker hand rankings to make straights and flushes work.

Just add a rule that if the rivers are all the same rank, all boards stay.

I agree. 100%!
