.... Joe DiMaggio, Cy Young, Rogers Hornsby, Yogi Berra, Carl Hubbell, Lefty Grove, Hank Greenberg, Robin Roberts, Whitey Ford, Eddie Mathews, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Harmon Killebrew, Jimmie Foxx, Ferguson Jenkins, Duke Snider, Mel Ott, Tris Speaker, Juan Marichal, Pie Traynor, Dizzy Dean, Roy Campanella, Bill Dickey and Catfish Hunter.
Which one of these is out of place in this list?
(Half credit for saying Killebrew...)
The closeness of the balloting is a result of an outstanding class of nominees combined with a wide range of voter tastes and preferences .... both of which are good things imo.
I suspect it go down to the wire on which three sets make it in this year, and none of the supporters for any nominated set should be disappointed with the results. They are all magnificent.
I'm honestly floored and grateful that three people voted for the Clermonts. I never expected them even to be nominated for anything just because they're solid hotstamps. Nothing against solid hotstamps - it's just hard to make them stand out from the pack in any way. Obviously all credit is to J5 and monkeydog who had all creative control over everything but the color choices.
That's pretty much what I did. Love both of Mark's sets. Had to vote for themInteresting to see how people make their picks. My criteria - If I could pick 3 playable sets with x-number of chips for free which 3 would I choose.
Yeah definitely a nail biter. It's going to be close for the last spot.
Over half the nominations this year can't be made any longer either due to BCC going out or the mold not being available. In no way is that making a statement about the job that the committee did - I have no qualms with the nominations. For my preferences, though, it's tough for any ASM/CPC product to compete w/the BCC/TRK sets because of the colors and materials. In fact, my top five on this list are BCC sets, and we don't get to a CPC-reproducible set until #7. That's tough sleddin'.Reminds me of how much the BCC loss hurts our creative possibilities.
That's correct, and I won't forget it because CdN was #4. I agree that the committee does an amazing job and it is filled with some of the most knowledgable and seasoned chippers we have on the forum. Wether it be 3 or 4 sets, the nominees are all deserving of the nod.Yeah definitely a nail biter.
Curious as to how the comittee decides on how many sets get inducted per year. Is it a certain percentage based on number of nominees? Because 4 made it to the promised land last year I beleive right?
It's a function of how many nominees we put through. We elect roughly 25% of the nominees. Since we put up 13 this time we went with three. I never wanted to dictate how many nominees we put up. It could lead to us putting up sets we didn't feel measured up to HOF status in order to make a quota.Yeah definitely a nail biter.

Oh that's right. Man that just proves how tough last year was if your set was forth. I'd like to think it was my vote that sealed the deal for ya. It will be interesting to see how the voting bares out of the next few days. I'll be very curious to see how the BCC sets fare vs. everyone else.
In all fairness there are already more ASM/CPC sets in the hall than BCC.I think this was mentioned very early, when the HoF was still in the inception stages. Separating chips by genera was ultimately shut down. It was decided that the Hof inductees should be determined by a popular vote, rather than a dictation by an elite few. Most chippers want to see the glorious colors inducted, and could care less about era, or meaning. Unfortunately, this means some sets (Casino Antarctica) don't have a chance.
I think this is the correct process. There are measures in place that prevent a set from being renominated every single year until it gets through. If the first few years are a celebration of BCC, so be it. ASM/CPC will have their day, as hopefully ceramics will someday.
I only just realized the Contreras Landa inlay backgrounds were chili peppers and not stylized guys in suits after seeing the $20 chip. Were there closeups of that set last year?
You are not the only one. Last year I thought they were a dreamlike visage of alien invaders when I first saw them. Even though I quickly corrected myself, I still have trouble shaking it from my mind.

Btw while all committee members deserve thanks I think @Toby gets the committee MVP for the year. A lot of the formatting is his idea and he did extra work in preparing more of the write ups than anyone else.I would also add that with the great descriptions from the committee, each member has the ability to read and decide for themselves how important era, company, composition are even if they are a noob. Great job by the committee in presenting the sets.
