I'm a $20 whore... I love em they make the most sense and match actual currency. It's what my customs will have. However my stance for $20 vs $25 is based on what your rebuys are. If they are typically under $100 then $20 makes the most sense. If your rebuys are $100 then $25's are more 'efficient' although you could argue a $100 chip would be most efficient.
I thought the reference was originally to holdem. Either way it ludicrous.
In any event did I miss something or why @Mace are you limiting yourself to 400 chips? Most cases are obviously made for 500 and if you are buying cheap chips and extra hundred won’t cost much.
I like the idea of giving the first 5 or so players all the fracs. Great idea.
So maybe a set up like this:
80 $.25s. Give the first 4 players a barrel or give 10 players 8 chip equallying $2
200 $1s
200 $5s
20 $25
That’s $1720 or almost three $60 buy ins per person. If it gets bigger than that let cash play.
Other than the first four players give 10 $1s and 10 $5s to every player.
That’s That was actually our $2/4 limit buyin many many years ago. It’s a poker chip forum so many people like a more chips in play. I my experience less chips are pefectly fine. People will make change if needed between hands if needed or the dealer can make change from the pot after the betting round is completed.
Or drop the $25s get 100 $1s and 320 $5s for the same $1720 but with more $5 in play.
This would be a much easier process if you could go to 750 chips!
Been hosting .25/.50 game for years.
100 fracs definitely enough for full table.
If I start with 500 chipset, these are denoms I would go with.
Can easily add more chips accordingly to the tendency of your game.
In the beginning I started with way too many fracs, then way too many $1 chips. Now perfected with a 1000pc chipset.
If starting with 500 chipset, to keep it simple with 50 increments, I would recommend
100 x 0.25
150 x 1
200 x 5
50 x 25
or
100 x 0.25
150 x 1
250 x 5
and use cash when all chips are used.
My cash game set of Tiki Kings is 25¢x100, $1x200, $5 x150, $10x50, $20x50, $50x25, and $100x25. Well balanced, clearly don’t use the higher denoms much but as a collector I wanted to own each Tiki chip and color way. Very pleased.

If it has to be 400 and you want to seat 10 at $50 buy-ins, and buy chips in quantities of 25.
100 x .25
150 x 1
125 x 5
25 x 25
For the first 5 players:
12 x 25c (60 total)
17 x 1 (85 total)
6 x 5 (30 total)
For the next 5 players:
8 x 25c (40 total)
13 x 1 (65 total)
7 x 5 (35 total)
After 10 buy-ins you'll have used up all the quarters and 1s. With 60x5 left, that will cover your first 6 rebuys. Then you'll have 12 more rebuys in 25s.
Total bank: 1,425, or 28 buy ins.
Frankly I think it'll work fine. You know your game better than we do. If you have 8 players and an average of 6-10 re-buys per night this will cover you easily.
If you can buy in quantities of 20 you can cut to 80 quarters and just give everyone 8 of those, then boost your 1 and 5 count a little.
It’s just silly. What is the standard opening raise in that $.25/.50 game? 30 big blinds??
The MAX buyin for most $2/5 NL games in AC poker rooms is $1000.
To the OP, most reasonable somewhat experienced players will buy in for close to the age old standard NL buy in of 100 BB or between $40-60. Plan your bank accordingly. If people start asking to buyin for $100+ increase the blinds.
This is the set I had made a couple years ago to get me through .50/$1 up to $2/5 ten handed. The blue chips are .50 and the rest are standard AC color denominations to give you an idea. I came to this setup from 20 years of hosting cash games….mostly $1/2.
A few years ago I started a new .50/$1 game that has been popular. Two games ago I dropped the .50s and made the game $1/1 with a max $120 buyin. It’s was a great decision!
Having only two denominations in play makes everything run smoother and without clutter. Cashing everyone out at 3:30am after a seven hour session and several beers is also WAY WAY easier!
Last game was 8 handed and I had about 80% of the reds ($5s) in play. Broke out some $25 just because a certain member here wanted them. But would have had enough $5s easily even with the multiple reloads.
I totally recommend this breakdown and recommend only two denominations in play.
