I'm looking to host cash games for 6-8 people, with a $20 buy-in (25c/25c). Before buying a quality set, I wanted to see if it made sense to buy 400 chips distributed into:

25c x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 100

or is it enough to buy 350 chips distributed into:

25c x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 50

Each person would start with 20$:

25c x 12
$1 x 17

I know it's always better to have extras, but for now, i'm trying to minimize the amount i spend (still in university) while making sure people can have a great time!

Any suggestion is appreciated!

For a $20 buyin starter set? Eh, you don't need the $1000 in bank, the ones would help keep the game going. Otherwise they're starting with 8 quarters, 8 ones, and 2 fives. For a .25c/.25c game, that sucks, cash game with less than 20 chips.

OP, just coming from someone who also loves the $20 buyin, I'd consider goofing around with nickel/dime. This means, instead of buying in for a short stack <100 BB), you're playing 200 BB deep at .05/.10 blinds:

100 nickels
160 quarters
100 ones
40 fives

That's $300+, much more than you'll use in your $20 buyin. I'm giving this advice because I was in your shoes; I bought a set that handled the tiny stakes plus a little higher stakes, but by the time I wanted to play higher I'd already grown out of my budget set and made a new set. At those stakes my players wanted to splash around and play stupid, so we enjoyed playing deepstack for cheap. No worries if this isn't your game, every group is different.

It's most likely gonna be a shovefest anyway  :ROFLMAO:
Give everyone 4/4/4

Thanks! I've thought of using nickels and dimes, but they seem to be less popular denoms (especially dimes). What chips do you usually use for your cash games?

They're definitely less popular, but that's the beauty of this website, we customize and play with whatever we'd like! I play microstakes with the set below. The $20s and $100s were just dumb lol, they were cheap so I wanted them but there was little to no need. I got tons of cheap chips so for $10, a player gets:

20 nickels
20 quarters
and 4 $1s.

Its not efficient, but having 44 chips is fun and splashy.

By the time you'll need a bigger set, you'll have moved on from $20 buyin games anyways. Up to you, maybe you're the outlier who buys one set and is happy and never buys a new set....but that's no fun!

man, these are cool xD

thanks again!

for an entry level set, I like the apache chips, 600 chip set will be (1) re-sellable as a set, and (2) easy to add on to, and (3) cover any game you want up to 1/2

I wouldn't buy more than 100 nickles, 100 quarters (or non denom, or .50), for a single table game. If you don't think you have enough of a denom, you can always go back and get more after you try out 100 and have a few games under your belt

Bring your efficiency elsewhere! Back to your link!

Been looking at Apache china clay's too, only thing is shipping to Canada is bit of a hassle (either more $ shipping + duties or i'd have to drive to the border). I've also been looking at "Phoenix Cardroom" from straightpokersupplies.ca as an alternative, they seem to be also china clay (not sure how they compare to the quality of Apache china clays tho).

I would go 100/150/100 if you're trying to keep chip count to a minimum. $675 bank means 33.75 buy ins at $20. Add 50 x $5 to bolster the bank if you want.

Give 1 person
16 x 25c
16 x $1

Give 7 people
12 x 25c
17 x $1

First re-buy
15 x $1
1 x $5

Remaining re-buys
4 x $5

I would second something like @NotRealNameNoSir said. Since you're in uni and people are probably all relatively budget constrained, a nickel will make the game more inviting, and people might want to reload with $10 instead of $20.

For 8 people:
10 x 5c (80)
18 x 25c (148)
10 x $1 (80)
1 x $5 (8)

Now you can only buy in quantities of 25 for most budget chips, so that rounds to 100/150/100/50, or $392.5 or 19.6 buy-ins at $20. If you could go up to 500, I'd do 100/150/150/100 which adds $300 or 15 buy ins.

This is helpful! ~ Thanks

I too am in uni and play microstakes a lot.
I would suggest you to play 5c/10c with tha buy-in (the same that i play). In my games the workforce are the 25c chips followed by the 1$. I suggest you to have 100 - 5c, 200 - 25c, 180 - 1$, 20 - 5$. I know this are 500 chips and not 400 but having this 100 more chips allows to you to have a lot more on the table and it is wasy more fun, expecially at micro stakes.
Usually we start with 10€ each and have frequent add-ons or rebuys so the starting stack is (18-25c) + (10-5c) + (5-1€ or a mix of 1€ chips and 25cents). For the add-ons and rebuys i use the 1s and the 5s and then players make changes on the table.
If you still want to take only 400 chips you can do 60-5c, 160-25c, 140-1$, 40-5$ but i don't reccomend using only 400.
This breakdowns work if on average every person plays with 30$ maximum, which is what i expect from uni games like mine. if you play more than this amount 400 chips surely aren't enough, use the 500 chips breakdown i gave you but take 3 more barrels of 5s and one less barrell of every other denom.

For a 25/.25 game with a buyin that low and even with rebuys…

One rack of fracs
Two racks of $1’s
Plaques of $5’s for rebuys.

Done.

Our .25/.25 game w/ a $25-40 initial and top offs to the big stack we do

Two racks of fracs
Three racks of $1’s
And all $5 plaques for rebuys

We have between $700 and a $1000 in the bank

Thanks for sharing! Honestly, we're usually 6, and occasionally go up to 7-8 and we're all graduating in a year, so i don't want to commit to a bigger set just yet. I'll definitely keep your breakdown in mind!

Thanks! Will be going for something close to the first distribution you described.

Plaques made my crew go nuts. And they transfer from cash set to cash set. I have the Dice plaques from poker store. Experimenting with hot stamping. We have no security issues so no hurry.

Nothing like 30 plaques in front of a guy.

25c x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 100
I will go for this breakdown for a small group poker. $20 note can go into play if you run out of chips.

It small but you have something to start your game with, if it became a regular thing and you manage to grow some poker chip bankroll.

Go for 100/200/300/80/20 breakdown for your "real" set next time

The question is whether $20 is the buyin or it is the amount people are happy to lose on a bad day. You really want the whole table to

FWIW for this very same situation, albeit in sterling I went for:

100x10p
200x50p
100x£2

£10 buyin, biggest loser has been £25
