So there's a good chance I will spend a week in Vegas this July. There is a huge volleyball tournament at Mandalay Bay, so will likely stay there to make it easier, but I was wondering if there was any reason not to. More seasoned Vegas pros, what's your thinking?

I plan on playing low-limit cash or tourneys while I am there. Looks like it will likely be during the last week of the WSOP events. Should I just suck it up and play at Mandalay Bay or make a trek to other casinos?

I found this thread with some great recommendations on dining and stuff: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/first-time-to-vegas.99623/

MGM and Aria aren't too far so that might be a trek worth making if Mandalay blows.

I would never stay that far south on the strip if you want to play any poker. Park MGM is one of my go-to's to stay at - some of my fav restaurants, it's smoke free, and a ~5min walk to the Aria poker room. It's also walkable up to Paris/Horseshoe for any WSOP events, and the wsop cash games are always good. I've never played at the Mandalay poker room, but can't imagine there's a ton of action down there.

Agree with the above and also like the Park MGM.

Ugh. My daughter's VB tournament is going to have to take priority and since it is being played there I don't have much of an option unless I taxi it back and forth for her games every day. I might just have to take a taxi on the nights/days I end up wanting to play.

I like the Mandalay Bay poker room. It is small - only 8 tables - but gets good touristy action since Mandalay Bay hosts a lot of conventions. It is situated right next to the sports book too. It mostly spreads 1/2 NL and rarely 2/5. The tournaments they run are worthless super turbos.

For more action and higher limits, take a walk to Aria or Bellagio.

A mile walk in Vegas summer heat sounds awful unless the casinos are connected. I’m not too familiar with Vegas but I’m liking that I can take a $15 taxi drive to ParkMGM and can get to the rest of the trip via monorail. Gonna do some planning of restaurants now.

Horseshoe is an option...poker wise the best location with Bellagio, Aria, PH, .... close by and it has a monorail station.
I you go to MGM station, it's about a 15min walk to MB....but in July it will be too hot for that.

If your poker time is limited, just use an Uber for poker and stay were it's most convenient.

EDIT: that's indeed WSOP time...I would stay away from Horseshoe/Paris if not for playing the series....you'll have huge waiting lists for cash.
And...book early, during the series, prices are up for sure (at least for HS/PP/PH)

Yep, it's the last week of the WSOP (ME first days are two weeks before). Something like events 80-90 or something. I am booking Mandalay Bay today for the week and will likely take a taxi to Park MGM to take advantage of MGM Rewards while I play. What time I play will depend on what time my daughter plays her games.

My wife and I stayed there last August for a long weekend. The room is really small and when we were there no more than 4 tables were going. I played there when I didn't want to make the trek to the games around Caesars or Bellagio. On the plus side, there's usually no list so you can sit right away which is never the case at the bigger rooms. I'd avoid MGM too as that room, while bigger than Mandalay Bay, is an uninspired, depressing mess.

I am definitely on board with those recommending Uber/Lyft. That's how I got around most of the time. Worth the money, IMO. Good luck and I wish you favorable flops.

Another great choice, espec. with family is Tuscany suites & casino.

Very relaxed, no high-rise mega hotel but streched out like a big park...never crowded.
Rooms are big & not expensive....only 5 min walk to best part of the strip & 15min Uber to MB

Great pool, awsome staff & well worth the money.
Plenty of WSOP players that stay for a longer time prefer the relaxed atmosphere there.

Check it before you book @MB

Hmm. My daughter will be with her mom and it will just be my wife and I but I'll take a look at that place too. Taking 2 ubers back and forth to MB for 5 days will add up though. Might not make the price difference worth it.

No, not price wise...but if you prefer the non crowded vibe...it's the best place in town imho

Uber > taxi (in Vegas at least)

Have a great trip :)

This x 100. When I'm in Vegas alone 5-6 nights, I uber all over the place from Southpoint to Fremont. Usually costs me around $200.

When wife & our travel partners go we rent car.

MANDALAY BAY-EXCALIBUR TRAM

This route on the Las Vegas Monorail varies based on what hotel you start at. If you start at the Excalibur main station, the monorail will take you directly to Mandalay Bay - about a 3-minutes trip. If you start from Mandalay Bay, you will stop at the Luxor and then the Excalibur - about a 7-minutes trip. The express tram runs daily from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and trains leave every 3-7 minutes. The all-stops tram runs from 11 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.

BELLAGIO - CITYCENTER - PARK MGM TRAM

The Bellagio - CityCenter - Park MGM tram runs daily from 8 a.m. - 4 a.m., every seven minutes. The tram arrives just about every 15 minutes and the ride lasts about two to six minutes.

You can literally take the Mandalay Bay tram to Excalibur, walk across the bridge to NYNY and next door is Park MGM.

Will be like a total of 5 minutes walking and the rest is A/C'd tram rides.

Oh dang! So there is something other than uber and taxis. This is great to know too. Thank you.

I must warn you that drunken benders & trams / monorail don't combine well.... (10.30 pm loooool)
But there is that option.

My parents owned car dealerships when I was younger and we would always travel to Vegas to visit the auctions there. We would always stay at the Monte Carlo as my dad was a VIP there (Park MGM). My parents never really had any restrictions on us, so me and brother would travel everywhere by foot.

I really wish Monte Carlo was still operating as I had a lot of my childhood memories there, it was my 2nd home.

You should've played our WSOP series...win ME ticket and $1500 travel expenses...enter WSOP ME but dont play a hand...go to your daughter's games. When she's off, you roll in like a baller to the Horseshoe and go Allin every hand. Win 12 million ME and private jet the whole team back to Bay Area. Dun!

LOL! Now I know what my subconscious will line up for dreams the next couple nights. McEachern calling my name as I hear the Bay Area crew chanting Cali! Cali! Cali! OI! OI! OI!

So I decided to go founders card route and get Caesar’s diamond status. MGM status matches which would get the resort fees waived (I assume I need the status before I check-in). Now I am thinking about doing the first night at PH (at less than $100/night I assume the hotel is awful), and then the rest of the trip at one of the MGM hotels. That first day I’d head straight to an MGM hotel and get the status match and then stay there. Or should I book MGM and just get the match status before I check in on day 1? At $40/night that would be about $200 in savings for the week.

Crap. Looks like MGM and Caesar's no longer do status matching with each other.
I think you can do an in-between at Palace Station...

Just checked...MGM matches

Caesars Rewards: Caesars Palace | The Cromwell | Paris | Planet Hollywood | Horseshoe LV | Flamingo LV | Harrah's LV | The Linq | Rio | Eldorado, Reno | Silver Legacy, Reno | Circus Circus, Reno | Harrah's, Lake Tahoe | Harveys Lake, Lake Tahoe | Harrah's, Laughlin | Tropicana, Laughlin

DIAMOND PLUS: advance to MGM Rewards Gold tier
DIAMOND ELITE & SEVEN STAR: advance to MGM Rewards Platinum tier

Where did you see that? I saw something about it ending in December of last year. Also, do you think I need the status matched BEFORE I book? If not I’ll make sure to get it once I get to LV and before I checkout.
