Advice for my first set (1 Viewer)

... I think 750 chips should be plenty, I might even be able to get away with just having 100-150 $5’s.

150 of the 5s should be plenty for two tables. I would build the set for 20 players (never hurts to have room for growth) with the following breakdown:

5s x 160
25s x 260
100s x 240
500s x 40

That gives you a budget of $2.00 per chip.

@v1pe I haven’t really looked into ceramics as I really enjoy the feel of nice clay chips so I kind of gravitated towards them by default. Do you have any recommendations?

I think most here (myself included) would generally agree that a true compression molded clay chip (Paulson/CPC/BCC/ASM/etc.) are the nicest option. However, ceramics have their advantages, namely price and the ability for greater customization and printing options.

OWPS and GOCC both offer custom ceramic options. See the recent group buys for Yaks (GOCC Protech I think) and for the Sunfly Hybrids (coordinated by OWPS).

Sunfly/Apollon is also located in China I believe, so perhaps you could work directly with them for a custom option.

Above all I would suggest that you get lots of samples before you make a final decision!

CPC has a min order per chip of 100 :( Speaking of which, the last time I saw someone try to get a hot stamped cash set gb together it failed. Whatever happened to that?

I’ll look into it! Could be a more economical option. Thanks again for your help.

You don’t need to order 100 of each chip from CPC. The minimum order is 300 chips. But you can order 250/25/25.

So if you want to order 700 chips you can have up to 7 different chips. But each one doesn’t have to be 100.

It could be 300/50/50/50/100/150.

The site can be confusing. Many people have made the same mistake.

Strange! I was emailing @David Spragg and he told me “Minimum order is 300 and minimum per chip is 100” Did I misunderstand something?

There must be some misunderstanding.
I think it means at least one chip has to be 100, which makes sense since you wouldn’t be able to order 300 chips and have 3 different chips without at least one of them being 100 chips or more.

I have an order in now for a 1000 chip tournament set. The very largest chip in the set I only ordered 20 of.

Add on orders have a minimum of 100 chips as well. But even then if you ask nicely he will make some exceptions.

When I added a 25c chip to my set he let me order 25 $500 chips as well even though I didn’t order 200 chips total.

I'm not sure, would the minimums for hotstamps be any different?

Definitely the more economical option especially if you want to go with something custom. You could get 2000 chips with custom designs and denominations from GOCC for ~$1350 shipped. Price per chip is going to go up a bit if you have less than 2k chips, but still much much cheaper than something like CPC.

But don't get me wrong, CPC chips are amazing and totally worth the cost, if you can afford it.

The cheapest and most cost effective way to gain possession of a great set is to do it right the first time. Take your time and decide what YOU like best in looks, feel, colors, weight, new vs used, inlay vs stamped vs shaped inlay etc etc. This will save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars chasing that perfect set....trust me.

For example don't waste your money on a new custom CPC set with 312 edgespots w round inlays if you would really prefer more complicated spots and shaped inlay. Hope that helps.

So true - I know first hand how much it can cost to "try everything" finding the holy grail. Well then, I'll need a lot of help over the next month or two to decide on a design and then to execute it!

I would say my budget is up to $1500 for a 750-1000 chips, so all the options above should be within that. Is there anything I haven't considered which maybe I should? Any other options that are maybe better? Maybe there's a h/s cash set out there I don't know about?
Have you seen the hotstamp Paulson Private Cardroom chips? As you may know, Paulson is no longer making any new chips for home sets or home. But there have been some sets that have traded hands in the past few years that would fit your needs for HK$5/10 game. Just search for Paulson PCR or Private Cardroom or Private Card Room here.

There might be other hotstamp sets that people have that would fit what you're looking for. You can try posting a Wanted ad in the classifieds, and you might get some

Are you only looking for sets with chip denominations? I've seen some sets (and I have a set) that are hotstamps with just someone's initials or an organization, like the BPOE chips below.

Good luck and happy searching.

Those PCRs are beautiful, and if I could get a set of those I'd be very happy. That's exactly the kind of h/s look I love. If only someone made an Atlantic Club H/S cash set (I'd set up a GB if I could handle it).

Those PCRs are beautiful, and if I could get a set of those I'd be very happy. I really love that kind of hotstamp look where there are words surrounding a number. As far as denominations go, I could go without them but ideally if the stamp is something that adds a bit of character to the set itself.

If only there was a group buy for a hotstamped cash set to spread the cost of dies around!

The minimum per chip is an average.

Five denominations means a 500 chip minimum. The actual breakdown can be anything you want as long as you don't make any one chip quantity too small. You couldn't do 495/1/1/1/1 for your chip counts, but you can go as low as 20 or so for one of the denominations.

I see, so he’s really just saying 300 chips spread over 3 chips minimum (to a reasonable amount). That’s great!

A couple of months ago there was a successful group buy for hot-stamped nickels, dimes, and quarters on the jockey mold.

Which reminds me. There are only certain molds that can be hot-stamped (A-CREST, CIRCLE SQUARE, HORSEHEAD, JOCKEY, SCROLL, B-DIAMOND, DIECARD).
