Akumal - Beach Casino (1 Viewer)

Type was a bit too broken/distressed - made it tough to read at 100% Inlay size of 1" - get worse if was 7/8" size. The "blue water shield" behind the type was a bit busy - I like the new waves layout more in this - helps with the "Beach & Casino"... which is small as is.

love where this netted out.
Sure; I meant the chips, not the inlay.

I'll give my opinion (likely worthless, so take with a grain of salt), but because I'm sitting at my computer with nothing else to do and a beer in hand and one already down the hatch. lol

I think OP's original chips looked great in isolation, and comparing them 1 v 1:
25c: preference on original edge-spots, but like the deeper magenta of the latest
1: same as 25c
5: major preference toward latest (love the sun)
20: could go either way
100: preference updated
500: major preference to updated

That all said, as an entire set I like the edge-spot progression much more of the new (simple 2-color edge spots > larger 2 color edge spots > complicated 3 color edge spots). So as a whole, I like the updated better - but again, personal opinion only. Just feels more cohesive.

You need a third beer and a fishing rig...

Greek mold?

OH! YAS!!!

Reminds me a LOT of the geometric Mexican sculptural patterns...

Love this theme and how it turned out. We went to our honeymoon right down the road so would love to get a sample set of these if they're ever available!

Thanks, Mandos. ...Thinking about ordering enough for 10 sample sets...

Funny note. We were supposed to do a "wedding/honeymoon" at Bahia Principe. We spent two weeks down there, flew in on a Saturday, chilled out for a week, worked with the resort for a few days to put our wedding together, had to run into PDC for bloodwork, then people started trickling in on Thursday for our Saturday sunset wedding.

People started flying out on Sunday afternoon, most were gone by Monday. ...we were going to fly out the following Sunday, while hoping to have most of the week to ourselves. ...my wife's mother stayed at the resort until Friday night. ...REALLY killed the honeymoon mood.

From personal experience.. double the amount of extras you think you want, because you'll find you'll want every single one "just in case". Lol

I planning to order well more than I'll need for our small games - most of which will be small stakes. So 10 extra chips of each denom for 10 sample sets is plenty of extras. ;)

I didn’t say it doesn’t fit the Mayan/Riviera Maya theme - I just said, it loses the Beach Club theme for me.

You do you, ofc.

The Greek mold is far closer to the Mexican beach than the Top Hat and Cane mold.

My "The Casino - Lousy Service" chip design (shelved for now)? 100% Top Hat and Cane Mold.

I get the idea and I really like the Design. I just don’t like the Greekmold :D

You don’t have to convince me - this is your Chipdesign!

Greek mold works very well for me with this theme. Echos the sun part of the logo and the geometric design isn’t too far removed from Mayan designs. I like it. Web would also work well In sure.

You could also consider doing one of the chips with a ‘promo logo’ showing the beach with value overlaid in place of all the text

To be fair, the Greek Mold wasn't my first choice. Nor was the web mold. I was pretty set on Top Hat and Cane when I started designing chips, back during my "The Casino - Lousy Service" session.

When this idea popped up, THC or RHC doesn't remotely fit, other than being a standard/typical Paulson mold - albeit a knockoff.

In a perfect world, I'd design a new mold - which would likely be a Mayan motiff, not a sea shell, starfish, or bikini bottoms... But being that's not possible for this set, the Greek Mold works the best with this concept. In fact, it saves me a lot of work and $$$.

I look at this design in the Web and Greek Molds - When I saw this design in the Greek Mold, it just brought the whole design together. The Greek Mold makes it "zing"...

Is there an actual price difference between faux Top Hat and other molds?

And Greek is definitely better here, I'd say!

Not sure about a price difference between RHC mold and the greek/web molds. There might be a price difference when you do a group buy, which I'm doing -- and the RHC mold isn't available in the group buy.

For pricing, I was alluding to "designing my own mold" for this chip.

Welp I already have an idea for a 43mm Mexico/Mayan tourney set - labels as a place holder - that'll change considerably - but now really want to finish that "CASINO" mold I posted in TINA molds thread...

Like it! Would be concerned that you might lose "Beach Casino" in printing. Also think the lower location text could likely use a size increase too so it is legible.

But looks good!
A bit a head of you, and I agree. I've been playing with this since this post - lightened the blue water background a bit. Had to update the text on the bottom.

The compressed resolution from uploading files to this site softens the images quite a bit. I look at these chips on my iPhone at 100% chip size, and it's pretty solid. ...though I expect, depending how these are printed, they could be a bit soft as well.

det

I just can't help myself.

As I kept looking at the colors of my last Northwoods Hideaway chip set, I kept thinking of Mexico.

My wife and I were married on the beach at Bahia Principe, during sunset. At the time, the Bahia was split into two sections - the Tulum side, which was the family side - where we stayed, and the Akumal side, which was the "no kids" side...where we preferred to go, since it was quiet. They've since really expanded the resort, but I really gravitated towards the name Akumal, as it's rather uncommon, but short and memorable for a graphic. Especially on an insert/label about 1" in diameter.

I designed the Akumal logo based on a multi-color logo/sculpture I've seen for Playa Del Carmen - not a total copycat - just "inspired by", as as these colors just make me think of the vibrancy of the Riviera Maya in general.

And came up with this....

View attachment 1360895

The colors and detail of the inserted graphic are really muted and compressed - the colors are quite a bit more vibrant than this photo.

I added a little stylized blue wash in the background to feel like the clear blue caribbean water. The sun is stylized after the Bahia Principe "Akumal" side of the resort. Again, not a copycat - just a stylized version.

As soon as my wife saw this, she said "SHIT YES!". LOL

We're planning to take our kids to this resort in a couple of years - and they're going to love it - though we'll be staying on the Tulum side.... doesn't matter.

So for now - the Northwoods is shelved - possibly indefinitely.

First of all, freaking love the design. I am thinking of "Royal Palm Card Club", so this is in my wheelhouse. Love it, especially $5 and $20 denominations! Question...What designer tool did you use to generate these templates? These colors and molds do not exist on CPC custom chip tool.

Thanks for the kind words.

If you're going to produce your chips from CPC, then use the CPC custom design chip designer.

If not, I'd recommend using the Paulson Chip Design Tool found here.

Really, you could produce chips in Adobe Illustrator (or Affinity Designer) or Photoshop (or Affinity Photo - and use 1200ppi) to create the chip, spots and edge design colors, and come up with your own for a Ceramic printed chip. They're simply printing your design. ...The edges would get tricky if you're trying to align spots with the edges.

If this is your first set, sounds like it is, then watch for Justin's next TINA chips Group Buy found here

I appreciate the feedback and link references. Very helpful! I am still debating whether to pull a trigger on clay chips, considering the price. David (at CPC) has been very informative as well. And yes, this would be my first set to design. That obvious, ha? lol

Currently utilizing good ol' Empire from Apache so I do not mind ceramic ones, but as the time passed, I started (as many others I am sure) appreciating clay.

Long story short, thank you again. This gives me a very good alternative. More to come...cheers!

For my AKUMAL set, there were two things that pushed me to TINA ceramics.

1. I wanted a set I could use with my kiddos and take to family gatherings without having to worry about losing a $3 chip. LOL

2. I just wasn't going to get the Caribbean vibe color-wise with CPC. I still want to make a CPC set, and I have two current designs relatively finished for these, one being my "The Casino, Lousy Service" set - though I'm sure I'll update the inlays as I go on.
