ASM Cash Game chip set advice (1 Viewer)

I like the new font and gradient for the denominations! Much better. Have you tried a red denomination? It would help with readability?

Also the colors look great. That blue chip is a great color and reminds me of some of the Home Paulson chips...a familiar favorite.

Each individual chip looks very nice, the problem I'm seeing is that all the chips are combos of red/blue/black/white, and then you have the one green/yellow chip which looks completely out of place. Also, I would pay a nominal fee and get one of the pro designers to help you out with the inlay ( @Johnny5 @p5woody @ttttubby to name a few). For a relatively small fee they can make your inlay really pop. If you're spending a couple to a few thousand on chips, its probably worth it (at least it would be to me).

I was considering to swap the 50 denom for a 25 denom, but that does not add up to min increment of 10's (for instance, someone would be able to raise to 85 when only 80/90 is allowed).

The only difference between the recommendation and what I have now is the small jump from 50 to 100. I have decided to not order the 1000 chip because I see that less numbers are better for the inlay design. Will just order more of the 500 chip.

I have taken the design advice into account though. Making some changes as we speak :)

You're fine. Use the denoms that work for YOU. It's YOUR game and you only you and your friends know how it plays. People, especially experts, will ask questions and your thought process, only because they want to help. In the U.S. the $50 chip is very unusual, but the $10 chips is used in many places, for example at casinos that spread $10/$10 NL, etc. But the world doesn't revolve around America (as much as we think it does :p). But don't forget toe get some $1MM chips as well...I hear you people play pretty aggro/big stakes (y) :thumbsup:..better yet, for the super high denom, use 1BTC :LOL: :laugh:

Thanks! Yeah, the 10 is inspired by the Paulson chip :)
I played around with red for the denominations and sort of liked it. Example added.

Any idea of ballpark fee for an inlay design? As you said, might as well get it done right when you first are ordering a huge batch.
The green chip is going to be changed, but unsure of which base color I should go for.

I knew I was forgetting somebody. I would pm some of them and get an estimate, but I imagine it wouldn't be super expensive . You seem like you have a pretty good idea of what you want, so I would imagine it would just take a few minor tweaks.

As far as the colors and edgespots go, I personally like to have an edgespot progression that seems to "flow." Usually start out with the simpler patterns as the smaller denoms and as the chip goes up, so does the spot pattern complexity. Also, If your happy with the colors of the other 4 chips, I'm not sure there is a color that wouldn't seem out of place. You could certainly do a green chip, but I would mix up some of the colors on some of the other edgespots so they can fit in.
 
Just an example of something I whipped together real quick. I kept the 100 chip and worked around it from both directions. I have to say, though, the most important thing is that you get something you like. When it comes down to it, "spot progression" and color variation really mean nothing if you don't like the chips. Play around with the tool until you get something that you're happy with, and don't try to please everyone else, because you're the one spending a nice chunk of change on a chip set.

Also, if you can, get a color sample set, because the chips on the design tool don't necessarily correlate exactly to what's on your monitor. And can be easier to come up with color combos you like when you're shuffling the chips.

There is a low percentage of casinos that use a $20 chip in poker cash games, or a tourney breakdown of 25/100/500/2k/10k, but these are some variations seen in a number of well designed custom sets. So in other words, it’s your set, and you have a license to do what you want, but also explore ways your custom set might actually play better than the casino norms. If the currency denoms require you to go the route you’ve listed, well it’s your set, do what you think works well.

The rule that well designed sets have denoms that increase 4-5x is well established, but not set in stone.

Hehe, I got the referance. We have a weird one about luck where we say that someone has "golden hair in their ass" :P

As for tournaments like T20000-25000 the break down we use are 8 x 25 / 8 x 100 / 6 x 500 / 6 x 1000 / 2x5000. Fairly standard I guess?

The 5/20/100/500 would obviously work, but then you would have to remind people to not bet 5's, such as 95, 125 and so forth.
I think I would rather do 5/25/100/500 than 5/20/100/500.

I guess that is why 20 denominations are not very often used, as it would make the 10 denomination pretty much useless, and since 5 is below the small blind we start at 10 when creating our sets.

Ahh, I only added the 5 since it was mentioned here,,, how about 10/50/200/1000? Or 10/25/100/500? Lol, I really don’t know what’ll work best.

Most of the clubs i have played in in norway play 10/20 as the standard game and sometimes 20/40 or 25/50 and maybe 50/100 on special occasions, while home games play anything from 1/2 and up depending on the crowd.

I think for 10/20 games you really dont need to have 50kr chips. A breakdown of 10/100/500/1000/(5000?) seem to be standard everywhere i have played and work very well.

Why do you want to have a 5kr chip? If it's for playing 5-10, maybe you could consider making that game a 10-10 game, which would play basically the same, and you could use the same chips as for the 10/20 game. If you want to play 5-5, then i would add a 25, and go for 5/25/100/500/1000.

Good luck with the set, and i look forward to seeing the results from a designer. There are a lot of good inlays being made by the designers here on pcf.

Also take your time with the chip design tool, and check out a bunch of the pictures aroudnd here for great inspiration!
 
I think your last progression is a solid set. they look good as a progression. To me the most important thing is each chip is instantly different from the other.

I also like each of the chips.

Hello!

I have created a 5 chip as well for 5/10, but might make it 10/10. We do not want a 1k chip for better control, basically. We have plaques for HS that we still would like to use. The 10/100/500/1000 would not work for us as we would have way too many small chips in play, and it would create unneccesary changing, slowing down the games a bit.

We are basically creating 3 full racks with extra chips on the side (roughly 1500 chips). With that said 10/25/100/500 would definitively work.

The 50 chip is sort of nice to have though in my experience due to 80/160 straddling not being unusual - creates less changing. Might be a better move to just make it 25/50 though.. We'll see.

Once I get the inlays created, if I am happy with the results I might get the designers to create customized felts as well :)

Happy with the feedback and progress on the chips so far!

Design looks very good.
I think these should print fine but....
....Print out each chip/inlay as close to actual size as possible and hold each out at arm's length to make sure you can read all texts/words in whatever lighting you play under to make sure all the elements are easily discernible without having to squint.

Sometimes just changing font style can correct issues.
 
Alright, so an update on my set.

Found out that PCF had their own chip tool, and also decided to go for ceramics instead of clay.
Kind of strange to change my mind in terms of material, but wanted to go for something a little more low maintenance.
Might look to get my hands on a Paulson set that I'll build over time for myself (they just feel like heaven).

Going to order from GOCC. No artwork yet, but will post when that's done:

Made the decision based on convenience and cost.
The total set would have been like $3000 with an estimate of $2 per chip, and that estimate might even be a low one, so roughly $3700 with shipping and customs.

Don't necessarily think they'd be worn out quickly, but when I came to think about it the chips would need to be cleaned often as well.
Then I saw how beautiful the GOCC chips were and I was sold :)

Will start building a Paulson set for myself though. Nice to have something really cool for home games.

Get what you want, but unless you're hosting games every night of the week with a lot of tableside food, I don't think chip cleaning is something you need to be thinking about.
 
Honestly not too bad, but if you have a surface on the chips, dirt and "grit" is not unusual.
Kind of disgusting, but you just clean them and oil them.

Went for ceramics this time around, but clay certainly has the better feel and sound.

4 times a week or so and food is not uncommon around the tables.
Decision is made now, but will get some quality clay chips for my personal collection :)
