Aurora Borealis Alert tonight (1 Viewer)

There was a X9.0 erruption today on our star, and it‘s earth directed.
The sun goes crazy these days…
If there‘s another blast, we have some Northern lights a few days long!

Let‘s hope for nice weather with no clouds : )

I‘m a little exited for this one!

I recommend keeping an eye on this page:

https://solarham.com/

It's run by and intended for the HAM/amateur radio community, but is actually a really good "dashboard" to keep an eye on things happening on the sun and how it interacts with the Earth. The graph in the middle just below the top of the page shows the recent flares and strength but below that is a map showing the aurora forecast for the current time. Brighter greens and yellows are areas where strong aurora could be seen.

The link to his FAQ at the top of the page describes a lot of what's going on there.

If all else fails and you are in an area that can't see it (hello from Arizona!) or have crummy weather, there is a realtime fisheye camera in Yellowknife, NWT, Canada that is a proxy for the real thing if it's clear there:

Seems like the northern lights are popping up all over the northern east coast tonight. Photo from my son in Delaware:

Nothing visible here at the moment, fingers crossed though.....

Visible from here in southern Arizona!

Just a quick snap with my phone from work using the built in camera app (and a tiny touch of Photoshop to help). I have my DSLR outside snapping shots while I work. I'll deal with those later.

The all-sky cameras we have for helping to watch the weather were red with aurora to the north as soon as it got dark.

My DSLR shots from last night.

Fortunately, I was at work at the observatory, so darker skies than I would have had in town. The bright first quarter moon didn't help much, but thankfully the show was in the opposite direction.

The scope I use with the best of the show in the background. The first of some pesky clouds, but they add some dimension to the shot which I like.

"My" scope, and one of the robotic scopes with some more clouds:

The big scope up at the summit with a crimson sky behind:

Finally the peak just to our east with a full arc of light over and behind it:

Pretty cool sight anytime, but always unusual to see as far south as southern Arizona! I've seen displays from other locations, with some absolute bangers the year I lived in Ontario, Canada, but it's a unique treat from home. Thankfully the moon wasn't too bright and let us get a look.
