A house rule I have is that you can rabbit hunt, but it’s $1 per street and it just goes into the next pot. People will pay it if they fold but want to see if they would have got there, or to try and put someone else on tilt if they fold a big draw to show them they would have hit it. I’ve been toying with the idea of instead of having the rabbit hunt money go into the next pot, it goes into a bad beat jackpot fund. I’m guessing we probably have $10-$20 a night in rabbit hunts, so it wouldn’t grow very fast but would still be fun when it hit.

Should I do it as a true bad beat jackpot where it pays the whole table, or should I just have it more like a Monte Carlo where it just pays one person (the person who got beat)?

We also do an optional high hand every 90 minutes for $10 per person with no qualifier other than both cards most play. Maybe I’ll take $5 or $10 from that each time to help fund the bad beat jackpot.

Any thoughts if this is a good or bad idea, or different suggestions on how to do it?

IANAL, but as a host, I wouldn't do anything that involves me keeping money, as it could potentially be seen by law enforcement as me taking a rake.

I sell Show'em chips at the beginning of each session which generates 90% of my BBJ. I also charge for Rabbit Cards & even absorb any fracs that don't chop evenly along with fracs at payout.

Currently we're at King's Full House or better that has to be cracked playing both cards. Before the current BBJ we had Jacks Full & Queens Full go down consecutive weeks so it seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

It's been at Kings Full for a bit now. I've got $250 allocated for the person who gets Bad Beat, $100 to the person who Beats him and about $150 Table Share that will be divided up amongst the other players.

When it hits I'll put the money from the BBJ into the Bank and hand out chips accordingly then we'll keep playing.

Our typical Buy-in is only $100 so this will be fun when it hits.

How do your Show’em chips work @TheRealTeddyKGB? Buy the chip and you can use it to make another player show their hand? Does anyone ever object to it, or is it just agreed to when you play in the game? I haven’t heard of those before.

I sell them only at the beginning of the game (or when a new player sits down) and then only a max of 3 show me chips/player. I don't have them pay cash but instead with dollar chips out of their stack. If the player doesn't wish to participate they don't have to BUT they won't be eligible for the BBJ.

Any player can use them on anyone at anytime.* Obviously they're usually played at the end of the hand BY the folding player but often other players will use them too on either or both of the players. On rare occasions I've seen them used well before the hand is over on players that have taken a long time before folding. Chip goes on their cards and they are revealed after the hand is over.

IF you're playing the 7-2 game & someone has played their chip it is returned to them as the 7-2 player has to show anyway to collect the bounty.

At the end of the night there are frequently unused chips but that's ok because you've already collected the money for the BBJ so it's on them-NO REFUNDS.

Here is how I've been doing it for about a year now and it's been working well for us. However, when I started charging $1 for Rabbit Hunting the number of hunts decreased dramatically, lol.

That’s exactly why I started charging for rabbit hunting. It slows the game down and people were doing it all the time for no reason. Just charging a buck per street and suddenly people don’t care as much about bringing a flop, turn and river when they folded their small suited connectors to a big raise.

So a full house losing to quads is a bad beat, but a full house losing to a straight flush isn't?
The first line says Quads (or better) > Full House. Last I checked a straight flush is better than quads so would qualify as Quads or better.

Usually for a bad beat it is more easily explained by just using (or better) after both hands, so in his case just saying:
A full house (or better) beat by quads (or better). This covers all hands that would qualify for a bad beat. No need to put all the additional stipulations of quads over quads or straight flush over quads, etc. Some people like to be thorough though.

What he said. ;)

Good catch. Thanks for clarifying. Yeah, I like your wording better.

Last week I got hit with this one. Full house beat by the straight flush. I looked it up and it was something crazy like .001444 probability.
The guy who hit also got a royal 2 hours earlier. Unbelievable night with 4 different people hitting quads. 22 players 6 hours of action.
I do like the idea of the bad beat jackpot and the rabbit hunting fee. Some players would buy a hunting license for the season where I play.

We have had 2 "Jackpots".

The regular one builds up by $20 a game, and the entire thing goes to a player losing with a full house or better. The largest it has gotten has been $60, so no need to spread that around.

The other jackpot was the game after we paid off the house mortgage. Over $1000, we decided to spread that on around...
  • 40% to the victim of the bad beat (losing with a full house qualifier)
  • 20% to the player that won the hand
  • 40% to everyone still in attendance. Go home and miss out on your share.
I do like @TheYeti 's over/under $500 marker that decides if the table is getting paid or not. I just hope the jackpot is known in advance. It could really influence the purchase of a rabbit hunt if the pool is at $499.

...though, as someone who used to write rules for boardgames, I must ask... who gets paid if the jackpot is exactly $500?

I think this is a good change, much easier to understand. Has it hit in your game yet? If so what was it at, and what is it at now?

Since I implemented the BB about a year ago, it has hit twice (we play monthly), both times it was around $200-$250. It is currently at almost $320.

To be honest, I only used the "<" and ">" signs so that I could keep those on one line each. :ROFLMAO:
