So Rounders came up tonight and the debate of best poker movies ensued. My top three with a special callout:
3. Mississippi Grind. Pretty good flick with bad beats and degens!
2. Rounders. Nuf said
1. Cincinnati Kid. Watchwd it woth my dad and then he taught me the game after that. Will always be number 1 because of that.

Special consideration: The Sting. Not a poker movie but a true classic with poker on the Century Limited!

Whats your list!?

Molly’s game is good.

There really aren’t many poker movies (or even just movies which include a little poker) worth watching, sadly.

I can’t watch the Casino Royale poker scene with a straight face.

Idris Elba’s (playing Molly’s attorney) monologue defending her in front of prosecutors toward the end of the film is amazing to watch.
Great actor, great scene.

There was a poker scene in Billions that was pretty cool in that hero won a big hand by pulling a Stu Ungar stunt calling down with 10 high to beat a missed small straight draw, instead of rolling over a straight flush beating aces full (mad skills, James).

The Sting is so good, just re-watched it the other day.

For all the Mississippi Grind fans (myself included), check out Robert Altman's 1974 flick California Split

This is the movie that Mississippi Grinds liberally borrows from

And it has the absolutely classic scene where Eliot Gould reads the whole table while sitting at the bar.

There’s also the long opening scene in a huge poker room which iirc was either shot at or based on Gardena:

From the way things go down there it seems casino regs haven’t changed much in 50 years.

Currently on Netflix and certainly worth the watch!

Nor should you. How the card playing scenes were written is laughable from any viewer who knows how to play NLHE. But that's not the point of the movie, nor any Bond movie, so you can take it or leave it.

Right… But we were listing great poker movies. Casino Royale might be a fun watch, but as a poker movie it’s absurdly bad.

This is just a great movie period. Altman in top form.

I'm surprised no one has given an honourable mention to the 2003 movie High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story

I thought Lucky You was actually great except for the romance element. The idea that he's a gifted player but too much of a degen to ever really be a serious professional player and his imo irredeemable scuminess was played very well by Bana. Has some great "old timer" scenes too.

It's ironic because it's ostensibly a romance film but the Drew Barrymore/Eric Bana plot almost has nothing to do with the rest of the movie. I think it could have been a classic if they cut it all out and just made a movie about a degenerate living in his father's shadow.

The poker scenes are also very well done, probably the best in a modern film.
