Hi everyone,

I’m in the process of organizing my poker chip collection and want to invest in a quality storage solution to keep everything safe and well-maintained. My collection includes some high-end chips like Paulsons, and I want to ensure they stay in pristine condition.

Here are a few questions I’m hoping to get advice on:

  1. Chip Racks vs. Cases: Are acrylic chip racks sufficient for long-term storage, or is it better to invest in aluminum or wooden cases for added protection?
  2. Felt-Lined Cases: Do felt linings make a noticeable difference in preventing scratches and wear on chips? If so, are there specific brands or custom options you’d recommend?
  3. Moisture and Climate Control: I’ve heard that humidity and temperature can affect chips over time. Are there any specific measures I should take, like silica gel packs or dedicated storage areas?
  4. Portability vs. Protection: For those who frequently transport their chips to games, what’s the best balance between portability and durability in a case?
I’d love to see photos of your setups or hear what’s worked well for you. Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to learning from the community. Thanks in advance!

I wonder where you heard that. I’ve seen PCFers warning that you need to keep your chips in a humidity controlled environment and I think they’re nuts. I’ve never seen a single report of chips being damaged due to humidity.
In terms of temperature (and fine, humidity if it needs to be discussed,) your chips will be fine in any conditions that are okay for you. You don’t need to keep your chips in an air conditioned space, unless there’s a chance that space might get really hot, like over 120 degrees? If your house is okay for you, it’s okay for your chips.

PCFers love to make a big deal about protecting their chips. The truth is that the chips rarely need protecting. PCFers just like to overdo everything because they’re hobbyists and that’s part of the fun. But seriously, felt lined cases? For the chips that you toss in the middle, and then rake back and then shuffle and shuffle and shuffle until the next time you get to toss them in the middle?

Poker chips are tough, resilient. They don't need fancy protection. No casino would want chips that fell apart when used in daily operations. Our home game usage is trivial relative to a busy casino.

Yes, there are ultra rare exceptions. More so in the single's arena than in playable sets.

Don't leave chips in the sun. Don't store them where temperatures are too hot (like in a car during summer). If you are going to clean a set - run a test on a single chip first.

All you need is a bit of common sense -=- DrStrange

Hallelujah!

Chips arnt that fragile. Yeah they become bike tires after decades of use, but in home games and a weekly game, they can hold up fine to years.

Racks or cases are fine. The biggest issue is temperature control and UV. They don't like massive temp swings (mostly heat, so mind when you ship when it's 110-120 in an area of the country) and they can fade because of direct UV sunlight. I think most everyone assumes moisture is bad too, but that's not an issue I have in Idaho as we are dry as f.

Most I know just keep em racked up, and use a travel hard case (like an Apache) or a birdcage for travel. Past that they should be fine.

Most of us store them on n acrylic racks. Of which there are many options. Racks and carrying cases are a borderline subforum here.

Correctly sized racks are important. You need different sizes depending on your chip types.

Covered racks like Matsui or Justin racks are nice for a couple reasons including not having chips rest on each other. That said I’ve kept chips stacked really high and never had an issue.

I want to ensure they stay in pristine condition.
Unless they are collectable single chips, if you are keeping your playable sets "in pristine condition" you aren't using the chips for what they were intended for... playing poker.

20k chips here, all in normal casino racks kept in acrylic bird-cages on shelves. 1/3 at my office (inside office) and the rest at home on shelves in an office with a smaller window with shades. Absolutely zero problem with any of them, with the oldest of the bunch being my first ASM custom set from 2007.

Don't overthink things. Get your chips into play and enjoy them.

Is there concern with keeping them in acrylic cases (Justin racks) in a room that has sunlight (provided they're not in direct sun)?
