Planning on buying a set of around 500 chips. I often don't host poker nights, so I was wondering what some of the best cases for transporting chips were. I currently have nothing.

Bonus points if it's budget friendly.

Any "outdoor" case. Pelicans and Nanuks are very expensive.
There are indeed many cheaper options, like the aforementioned "Apache". And more.

Chips are going to be stored in acrylic racks within the outdoor cases.
So, please have 600 chips to make it an even number (6 racks on two floors of three within the outdoor case).

I'm waiting on an apache case sale from HF myself but I need a handful of them at this point. If you're buying your first set- I wouldn't invest too much in the case that is going to perform very similarly to less expensive alternatives.

I also agree with Apache cases.

As @doublebooyah85 mentioned, the Versa 600-chip birdcage is great.

Versa also makes a flat, suitcase-style case for 500 chips (but it's $10 more):

The latter can be customised for 620 CPC chips or 640 "Tina" chips.

10 rows x 52 CPCs / or X54 China Tina ceramics
Middle area: you take out the unnecessary dividers by bear hand. Now, there is room for 4 soft tubes, each housing at least 25 chips. My 2c

If you spent < $1 chip I would just get a cheap aluminum case. $35-$40 is tough to beat. There are a lot of nay-sayers around here on these cases, but so far there has not been a single report of a case failure.

If you spent > $1 chip, I'd go Apache. Those cases are built to protect valuables, but it's overkill for Tinas.

I'd also use an Apache when travelling by airplane, although in 2017 I flew to Las Vegas with a set of chips in an aluminum case (carry-on). They were ceramics, so loss was a concern, but not a major consideration.

@Mrs Poker Zombie also makes a custom reenforced tote bag. Good for carrying chips in racks, plus you can have a custom design.

As everyone has already suggested, Justin racks in an Apache. This is 1200 chips (4 flat racks under vertical racks).

I also love Versa Cases.

I would love to know how you did this, if you don't mind sharing it with me :)

I bought a 3800 and would love to put 1200 chips in it (I have all justin racks).

Did you custom cut out the edge of the foam on the right hand side?

@Saditsfact

Wish I had seen this sooner. There are 4 justin racks laying "flat" in the bottom on a single layer of foam. Followed by 8 racks on their sides atop. You can see from my photo, I pulled out all but a single layer on 3 sides and a double layer on one long side (opposite of the handle, as the way it's carried or will sit).

Nice but very comfortable tight fit. and it weighs alot . .

Good Luck !

Ah, thanks for the details! I think I'll try making my 2nd 3800 this way, I wasn't sure if you did something different for the sides but I think it just compressed the foam with the racks shape naturally :)

Thanks!
I already made one of my 3800 cases to hold just 800 chips and even that is heavy, so maybe not. Do you know how much that case weighs?

Maybe I'll try that type of fill in my 2800

Where can I buy these cases? I can't find them anywhere. Is there any way to buy them in Europe?
They have harbor freight in Europe? That’s where these cases are from. I think they’re mostly sold in stores only if I’m not mistaken.

No, they are not in Europe. After using IA, finally know how to search for this type of cases. I think Ill buy this one, or something like this (not sure if 500 chips fit here, or to buy a larger one in prevention of futere chip buys):

That case is approximately the same as an Apache 2800 from Harbor Freight, which is approx 30cm x 22cm x 14cm.
If you search around here for "2800" there's a bunch of threads with photos. Looks like 500 might be ok, but the dimensions of your case are slightly different. Here's one:
