Well I’m back, six months later. I bought the Showdown set, but got called away and only recently got back to this little project.

The problem is I can’t use the Showdown set, the label size is smaller than I can work with unless I get the labels professionally done rather than printing myself. Plus I have found out that I prefer a lighter chip. In retrospect I probably should have purchased samples first. Lol I’ll probably be putting these in the classifieds soon; they are on eBay but have not gathered much interest, maybe I didn’t discount them enough…

So now I’m back to square one. Given my budget anything Paulson or CPC is out of my range. Here is what I know:

I need a chip that can take a 1” label
I prefer lighter weight chips
I like fancy chips
I am taking this WAY to seriously!!

Claysmith chips (chip and stick and 12-stripe): nice designs but heavier than I want.

The newer Nexgen chips: Logo on chip is a little big, but I like them. There is a local store who has them on sale, I may get some to use as a ‘customizable’ set for charity tournaments I run from time to time.

Milanos: There as nice as well, but the trapezoid pattern doesn’t do much for me. They appear to be a step up from Nexgen, and are cheaper than Majestic.

Majestic: Really like these, they are a bit pricey and offer no volume discount.

This time I was smart enough to get samples of each. Right now I am sort of leaning towards the Majestics, but for 1000 chips they are $70 more than the Milanos and 2x the Nexgens. Is it worth the difference? I guess I’m the only one who can answer that for myself, but I’d be interested in hearing other opinions.

Thanks,
Lou

My guess is that you already know the answer, given your experience with the first purchase. Sooner or later, you'll get the chips that you really want anyway so you may as well skip the intermediate set and cough up the additional $70 now. All things considered, it's a drop in the proverbial bucket. IMO, of course.

I went through the same. Looked for a stock set that I could toss on a custom label.
Evaluated the exact same sets and came up with basically the same opinions as you.

In the end, I got itchy and impatient and wanted something now and wound up getting the Claysmith 12 stripe. Got them for $0.15/chip w/ free shipping.
After I got them, I had some buyers remorse. Don't get me wrong, I like the chip just fine, but it was not what I really wanted. Wished I had gone with
the Majestics, but at the time and at >$0.25 more a chip, I could not justify it, but I wish I had.

That said, I hosted a game and the guys really liked the Claysmith's ( they are used to dice chips so anything is an improvement to them ). But I still want a better set.

Luckily, one guy asked me where he could get some of the chips from and I told him wait like 6 months and I'll sell him my set. He was like sure.
So now I can save up a bit more, sell my impulse buy and get something I want more, like the Majestics.

Moral of the story, don't cheap out. Get what you want now, because @abby99 is right. You'll eventually wind up getting that set, so just skip the starter set
and go right to your dream set. I got lucky in that I'll be able to unload my regret for what I paid for it, but that's not usually the case.

In the mean time, I had even more luck and won a raffle here for a 400 chip cash set of PCA's. Went from bargain basement to penthouse! Now I'm looking at
getting a custom CPC set. It never ends. Sigh. But it's fun. Enjoy.

I don't think anyone has had anything bad to say about Majestics, other then a bit higher price. They should last me a good long time, so yeah I think that is the direction I will be going soon. I sold some of my other chip sets, and am looking to part with the Showdowns and some older (better) Prestige Pro in lower denominations. That will give me the $$ to get the Majestics, and maybe even start on the NexGen set while they are on sale. That will give me:

1000 Majestic for my personal set.
1000 NextGens that I can put custom labels on for smaller sized charity events.
3K+ Dunes Commemorative that I can use for big charity events.
2300 Colorado Casino chips from Tilt for special occasions.

So many chips. So little time to use them. ;)

Thanks for the confirmation, and helping me get my game plan set!
Lou

PS: Someone was showing off some WSOP replicas in the forums somewhere, might have been a while back. Wouldn't those labels look awesome on the Majestics? Wish I had that kind of graphic arts skill or could find the labels online, I'd do that set in a heartbeat. I don't think that the WSOP folks would be happy about that though... lol

arch3r is right on. Be sure to know what you want before buying. I like it that you like the Majestics...That was the set I went with for both tournament and for cash.

I don't know if you will end up custom labeling your Majestics or not, but I have several blank Majestics for sale if needed in the classifieds.

Good luck in your set purchases! Sounds like you are on the right track.
