I have my brother-in-law for a Christmas exchange. He put down a "basic poker chip set" without knowing about my chip addiction. Since the suggested amount is $50 total, I'm pretty limited in my options. His goals are 5-6 players, cash, $20 buy-ins with new friends (he just moved out of state). Those stakes require a nickel, so I was going to shoot for a set played at 1/100 of face.

$5x100, $25x150, $100x150, $500x50, $1000x50 plus a case? Anybody have some slugged, denominated chips they want to move?

I have some showdowns that might fit the bill...ill check denoms if you want.

After further review...it may not work...these are number only no currency symbol chips...but I have 100-10s, 200 -5s and 200-25s. Then I have 100s, 500,s 1000s and 5000s.

You could get 300 poker knights from Apache for $45 then he could also add on at anytime.

Strongly considered. If I'm going new, it's between Poker Knights and the Brybelly Mint chips. I'll probably just blow the budget and get 500 though rather than have him add on later. What's a few more $$$ for moar chips?

Do you really need 500 chips, though? I'd think a micro-stakes set for 6 players using $20 buy-ins would need no more than 400 chips:

100 x 5c
100 x 25c
100 x $1
100 x $5
----------
400 chips = $630 bank (five+ buy-ins per person)

I'd rather use the Showdown chips than Poker Knights -- no currency symbol allows them to be easily used as cents.

How does this breakdown sound for a typically short-handed table?

75 x 5c
100 x 25c
75 x $1
25 x $5
25 x $10

It would also run a T2000 with rebuys, I think.

In my opinion, the $10s are really unnecessary. Go with 50x of the $5s. If you need a baller chip... snag a handful of these bad ass plaques. I got mine in play last Friday, and my crew friggin loved them. Don't want to drop the coin on the plaques? Then consider 10 or 15 of the Majestic $20 jetons. Just as baller when stacked on your table.

I think you need more than $400 in bank for 6 people, even at microstakes like this. The Matsui plaques are an insane suggestion to go with slugged chips, which I normally encourage but won't be following this time. The Majestic jetons are great, but they won't be in the US until next year.

I have 75 $500 Milanos that I have never used. Will sell them to you for $20 plus shipping if that will help.

Thanks for the offer, but the Milanos are a no-go at this point. Both Apache and Brybelly are out of stock in key denoms.

Then I'd just jump up and get some $20 chips from whichever set you choose. Just saying... $10s seem to always fall by the wayside and go unused. $20s are great for rebuys and buying back off the table as most people carry 20-dollar bills. And if he ever expands his set for a larger .25/.50 or $1/$2 game, the $20s will come in handy while those $10s will sit and collect dust.

Just my .02.

I agree with ditching the $10's. Have you checked out the Nexgen Pro's? Their an ABS chip, but not slugged. They're (IMHO) some of the nicest ABS chips, and they can be had at the link below for around $.15/chip.

A local game uses them, and they've kinda grown on me (as a better alternative to dice chips).

And they have a blue Non-Denom chip that can be used as a nickel or whatever the game needs.

They're actually labeled $1000, just played at $10, in every set I've been looking at. The nexgens might be a good solution to the general lack of nickels out there.

How about this 500-set? Instead of nickels, use $1s as dimes. PM me if interested.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have a 300 chip set sourced that fits in the budget. If he gets into it and actually hosts some games, it won't be a huge loss to upgrade to CC or add on a bit.
