Hello, everyone

I am entertaining the thought of hosting a cash game at some point with a bit of a higher buy-in. I am looking at obtaining a set of custom poker chips from CPC, but I am wondering: is it perhaps better to go for a less expensive set? The reason for my question is mainly if some chips gets lost or "gets lost". Is the norm to change a whole set if so-so-many chips are lost? Or does it not matter, as the only important thing is how many chips you start off with before the game begins? To be honest, I don't really think any chips will be missing, but am curious to your thoughts about this, if any. Cheers.

It really depends on preference, I have not lost many chips over my life out of sets, If I would have a compromised chip it would need to be 100$+ for me to even consider the set compromised. And then I would just reorder that chip in new colors.

i don’t think it’s a concern. They ship extras in case a couple get lost or taken. Usually if taken or lost, it’d be a chip in play, and probably a low denom, so the bank will be over that day. No need to change out the set to prevent someone from cashing it in later.

Good point, thanks for sharing.

Do you currently host a game? What would the change be?

I ask because I had a hiccup changing games, and totally messed up what I bought (read- over spent on the wrong set).

Unless cost isn’t an issue, my recommendation would be to host a few new games before going all out on a custom set. That will help you validate the quantities of chips and that you’ll have the game in place to play with your set when it arrives.

No, I have only previously played in (home) games.

Yes, I will very carefully select which chips to buy (and might buy some more, just in case), but I appreciate you making me aware of it.

I both overbought and bought the wrong sets.

I bought for a NL cash game I used to run pre-pandemic (and bought way too many before I knew what I was doing) and then bought a micro-stakes set for a game I planned to run.

I haven’t hosted a NL game since the pandemic started and those sets have never been felted.

Turns out my game shifted to Limit- completely different setup.

That is too bad. I hope you somehow manage to use them for something in the future, or, if you end up selling the set one day, that others can benefit from it. Thanks for sharing.

No

Just make sure you rack them properly after every game, before any people have left, and you won't be missing anything.

(says he who never hosts cash games...  but has racked a fair amount of chips at least)
Not always practical if you host a cash game, because players usually don't all leave at the same time. More often than not a couple of players will leave earlier than the rest.

However as mentioned above, take care of the chips you have. Don't leave them laying around randomly when you are hosting, especially the higher denom chips. To avoid anyone having chips from there that are not in play. If for some reason someone takes home a chip from play that they have paid for, the bank at the end of the night will be up whatever the amount is taken out so its not a huge issue. But if someone grabs a couple 500 kr chips that are not in play, you will have trouble at the next game if they bring them back and put them in play.

Depends on a couple of factors to me. If it's a friendly homegame with people you know (and low stakes) it's not likely an issue imo, I don't think people are generally strealing from friends.

However if your are running some sort of club with more diverse/unknown players with a lot of different people in the mix, and the stakes are high, I would definitely be very careful with chip security. For example keep the chips locked down somewhere where only you have access and be very serious about buying in and cashing out the correct amounts and not giving others access to the chips that are not in play.

All of the above is good advice.

I would say when running a cash game:

1. Inventory chip set prior to game. Keep chips in a container that can be closed/locked and only you have access to.
2. Player gives you cash, give them the correct amount of chips (double count both cash and chips)
3. When player cashes out give them their cash (double count both cash and chips). Return chips to your closed/locked container
4. Inventory chip set after game.

At the end of the night you should have all of you chips back. If not you should have an excess of cash.

The most likely issue is not chips disappearing but you miscounting your bank (either not taking enough cash in or giving too much cash out). Again if there's a €5 chip missing, you should have €5 too much cash. Of you'll have all your chips but your bank will be light.

This is not to say that over time when moving stuff around you might not lose a chips or that in drunken apocalypse chips get spilled on the floor and one goes missing, but again you'd be short chips but up cash.

That said always order extras.

No.
Unlike a tournament this is a cash game, so you don’t need a specific amount of each denomination of each chip - you take people’s cash and you hand them chips in whatever denominations you have on hand that equal that amount of cash. If one guy gets 5 x $5 and another guy gets 1 x $25, who cares? (As long as you have sufficient amounts of each denomination on the table to keep the game playing smoothly, but that’s a whole different discussion.)

And as others have pointed out, cash chips don’t often go missing from home games - they’re always on the table and they should never go into anybody’s pocket. And what kind of creep would intentionally take a souvenir from somebody’s home game?

And as others have said, since the players have paid for those chips, if one goes missing, that’s just extra cash in the bank.

Always always always buy 5-10 extras of each denom when ordering from CPC. Yes, you’ll probably get a few bonus chips but always safe to guarantee yourself some extras for loss or damage.
This, but I'd say this is a great general rule, no matter where you're buying from it's a good practice to have a spare "just in case"

In my experience my players dont notice a difference between sets. As long as you get a decent set for .40 per chip or better its plenty good enough

Thank you for your input, everyone, your points are duly noted. There are certainly a lot of helpful people in here!

Yes, I am planning on storing all chips in a locked room, where only I have access. And of course, I am not letting anyone play, only people I "know" are trustworthy. Also, I might also accept cryptocurrency, which reduces the cash lying around even more. Thanks for your input.

To me there is no risk given it's a chip in play which is missing. --> Make sure only you can access the bank.

Also, order extra chips. With CPC I ordered 15 extras of each denom to cover losses. You'll also receive extras on top. Better being safe than sorry because if you need to addon, it's 100pcs per denom with often months of waiting.

(Just letting you know I'm also looking to buy a cash game set, maybe shipping can be split if we do something together. I'm situated in Møre og Romsdal)
