A good friends fiancé asked me to pick him up a nice chip set. I asked what the budget was. She wasn't sure (I don't think she realizes how expensive they can be). I want to give her options in different price ranges.

Players: 10 max, usually 4-7

Stakes: .10/.25 or .25/.25

Current set: dice chips

Milono's from Apache. Looks to be 155 plus shipping? I've never handled them. Thoughts? http://apachepokerchips.com/milano-poker-chips.html

I might be able to get a set of ceramic Nevada Jacks for 180 shipped. Waiting on the break down.

I quickly surfed the classifieds here and CT. I didn't see anything that would fit his needs.

I am trying to hammer down a price range. If I do, I'll update.

Any clay sets I could order in the 300-400 range for a 1 table game.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

vignoble chips. I'd have to check the break down to make sure it would work. He might be able to have a 1 table tourney and a 1 table cash game out of this set. Anyone have experience with vignoble chips?

I think 350.00 might be pushing the price range anyways.

How about casino used chips? I have some Dragonara Palace with dimes that I could build a cash set for him at that price range. The dimes are in gorgeous condition but the .50,$1 and $5 are casino grimy. And since its an old European casino, it has a L for lira instead of $ for denominations. LMK if this will work and I can build a breakdown and some pictures for you.

I would have to recommend you get new chips. Most uninformed people would see old dirty casino chips and say yuck. Milanos seem like a good option, or Pharoahs or Dunes from chip room if available. Those are china clay and nice enough chips.

I agree, figured it wouldn't hurt to see pictures of said chips

A 10-player low-stakes game (.10/.25 or .25/.25) can usually be accommodated with a 600-chip set. Decent china clays would be around $240 (I'd suggest Majestics), and mid-range ceramics would be in that same price range (check out the Venerati line).

Finding a set with a 10c chip will be harder than sticking with a more common 25c $1 $5 $25 breakdown, although Majestics can be ordered with 5c or NCV labels, and the Venerati line has NCV chips in four colors.

I've always like the Venerati line. Easy-to-read denominations, classy old-school artwork, and are sorta reminiscent of solids, even though they aren't.

I know you stated you didn't want to do CPS unless its a last resort, but I do recommend them. I use them in my 5c/10c game (yes, we play micro stakes), and its really well made.

I agree seeing dirty, old casino chips would be a turn off for a beginner chipper. So I'm gonna pass on digging the chips out for a photo shoot. I bought a bunch of them mainly for the mint dimes and I was gonna clean the rest when I have the time....its been 2 years. :p

But I double thumbs up (y) the Venerati Ceramics for a newbie. They're good solid chip for the money and the design is pretty classy.

Pharaoh’s club china's are pretty nice for the price if you're going the new route.
Those Venerati look pretty nice too.

Those Venerati do look pretty nice. I think I will forward that to her for consideration.

I sent her a long email yesterday with different chip sets. She narrowed it down to the Milano's (gonna check them out at Paulo's tomorrow night) pending my opinion of them after handling them or the NJ skulls.

The Milano's are 180 shipped and the skulls are 260 shipped (both for 500 chip cases). I think we have settled on a .25/.25 set with a $30.00 buy in.

I forwarded her a picture of the Venerati. These have moved to the front of the line.

I used to own a set of Veneratis back in the day and loved it... For an off-the-shelf ceramic set, imo, they are head and shoulders above all the others... Even above those that are considered 'better printing quality' from the same vendor... The only minor thing to point out is that the 25¢ and the $100 can be difficult to differentiate in pots (won't happen after, right?)... Still today I think about getting a smaller set of those... Big fan here...
