Anyone else experience something similar?

Bought a dozen or so “previously played, casino decks of cards.” They all came with the corners cut and some kind of sticker over the carton to show they’re new.

Brought some to a cash poker game, busted them open and proceeded to count 52 cards. We played for probably an hour or so then realized to my great disappointment there were 2 King of Diamonds. Refunded everyone their money, and was rightfully embarrassed.

Needless to say, that reputation is a tough one to shake!

I think if it's a game that involves "moolah", I'd splurge and as a minimum use a new sealed deck of Bicycle paper cards.

Where did you buy these cards from? If you're going to be playing any type of poker with cards I highly suggest getting plastic playing cards for that.

You can use casino used cards, but they are going to be plastic coated paper. Meaning that you can't bend them in the same ways that you can a plastic playing card. Overtime the casino used cards will get warped from being bent and will no longer be fun to play with.

I know that some used casino cards in Vegas are inspected/put together by prisoners. Nothing against them of course, but you definitely need to inspect each deck before putting them in play. Regardless of what decks you use, I'd recommend spreading the deck and inspecting the cards each time you play. You're not usually going to have any issues, but it's a good practice for a couple of reasons. One, it's good optics for the fairness of the game. Two, it's good to make sure the backs of the cards don't have any identifying marks from previous games such as a fleck of dirt or a stain from food, etc.

I picked up a deck once at a multi table game and was like "there's no way in hell this is right" so I sorted them.
Turns out we had 59 cards on this table.

I introduced plastic cards to my gang. They were Modiano Old Trophy. That was big improvment over previusly used paper decks.
I gave 2 decks to the guy who invited me to this innercircle.
Few months later he told me a story.
He was the guy who carrys a deck of cards just in case, you know the type.
He went to our usual spot that was pool club just to have a beer and play few breaks. there he noticed a bunch of people playing poker and asked if he could join. They agreed and since they were using paper deckk he took Modiano out of bag and put them in play. he was a big winner but when they settle and he was putting cards into box he notice that Ace of Hearts was still inside.
He gave them cards and their money back and left in a hurry...

At one time, this was correct. However, I believe that there is at least one company, if not 2, that buy used decks from casinos and they re-sort the cards and cut the corners (to cancel the decks), and in some instances send some back to the casino's gift shop, and also distribute to retail stores like Dollar Store, 99 Cent Stores, Family Dollar, etc. Unfortunately, there are some built-in problems with this. Sorting is still done by human hands. Casinos do not always insert used decks back into the original tuck-flap boxes, so the sorting is from a container full of cards with mixed back designs (colors). And, with the advent of card manufacturers shipping multi-deck cards, in a single box or packaging, when they come off the table, there is no box to put them into, so they get tossed into some sort of container. Also, blackjack and other table games don't use jokers! Often times, jokers get pulled from the new decks and tossed. Sometimes, jokers get handled separately and get corner cut all by themselves and then sorted into re-packaged packs. All is well until the cutter places the jokers upside down in the cutting machine. It's not like it used to be. I have purchased packs of cards that have extra cards, fewer cards and even packs with nothing hearts, or clubs, or even with missing cards and extras that don't make sense.

So... If buying "casino used" packs/decks, always open and verify what you are getting, before play.

There are many, many ways that casino decks get cancelled, corner clipping is but 1 way. Others include, double corner clipping (opposite corners), edge slot cutting, felt-tip pen edge marking on 1 edge, 2 edges, 3 edges and even all 4 edges, drill hole through center of deck, and, any multiple of those methods! Also, it is not unusual to find corner clipped, drilled decks and edge slot cut decks done while the cards were still in the pack.
