Whether or not a chip has a recess depends on the specific mold design itself. Some mold designs contain a recessed space; others do not. And in either case, the inclusion of an inlay will cause material displacement during compression -- which creates a recess that can be seen if the inlay is later removed.
For example, the THC mold contains a designed recess -- pressed blanks will exhibit this characteristic, while chips pressed with inlays smaller than the recess will exhibit material displacement under the inlay itself.
Some CPC molds have no designed recess -- so pressed blanks have a flat surface and center area, while chips pressed with inlays exhibit material displacement under the inlay.
THC mold chips with hot-stamps have the stamp in a recess, making the material displacement from the stamping process unlikely to cause stacking issues. Molds with no designed mold recess must have the hot-stamps scraped after stamping to remove the displaced material so that they will stack flat.
