Yeah of course. I’ll give empty rack(s) to whoever wants to color up and they can exchange with their neighbors or from the bank. Photo was from a 50¢/$1 NL game.

Same. We color up in our cash games. Common result of giving so many $5s early on and new players coming in to match stacks.

As this thread is evident not everyone wants mounds of $5s. Chip up no problem!

I'd allow them to chip up and get rid of their 5s, sure, but that doesn't go unnoticed and they're 100% not invited back. Disrespectful behavior...

If we’re taking votes, no, coloring up is not a thing in a cash game. It’s up to the host to put the right combination of chips on the table through buy-ins and re-buys. But it’s a pretty hard thing to screw up.

Haha I’ve even seen it in casinos! Not common. Probably once every 10 cash game nights someone chips up.

I dunno, it just seems to me like one of those things that novices often want to do, but there’s no need for it.

I was playing a $1/3 game where the weirdo lady next to me always wanted to color down - every time she got a green chip she’d sell it to me for reds. Fine, whatever. I 100% couldn’t care less which chips are in front of me.

I have a lot of viewpoints like that - I’m opinionated. But I did say “if we’re taking votes” so yeah, just an opinion.
I’ll stand by this though - a good host should be able to keep it from being necessary. Unless the blinds are being raised. But that’s a different story.

This happens at casinos. U play 10+ hour session you’re going to need to chip up if you run on a big heater. Just left the Wynn and I saw it happen numerous times.

I guess that makes sense. Chips work so differently at casinos with more people coming and going, not to mention all the raking. I’m more of a home game cash, casino tournament kind of guy. So I’m sure you’re right.

I recall ages ago playing in the 3/6 limit game at one of the local tribals where one player went on some epic run and had the "power pyramid" of her winnings stretched past the betting line and the room manager came by and colored up a bunch of her stack. It wasn't so much the player wanted to chip up, but the brush or dealer decided it was a bit obscene and becoming a bit of a problem for the game to minimize the number of chips on the table!

I don’t like having to use racks and racks of chips of the blind denomination but I think cardrooms also prefer this to make the rake less conspicuous.

I am surprised that the general advice for a 1/1 game is to get one rack of singles for the (w)hole table. But when playing 2/5 or lets say 5/5 a lot of ppl advice to get 4 racks of $5s or more. I can't figure it out from a mathematical standpoint.

I don't think that "one rack of singles" is the generally recommended advice for a single-table 1/1 or 1/2 no-limit cash set. Most recommendations will look something like this, with two racks of $1 chips and 600 chips total:
200 x $1
300 x $5
100 x bigger denoms ($20/$25 and $100, usually an 80/20 ratio)

Dropping the number of $1s to just 100 typically isn't recommended until you get to 2/5 stakes, when the $1s become only chips for the blinds.

Ich read it several times at PCF so that I thought it would be the general recommendation. 200/300/100 looks good.

You might be able to drop to 1 rack of singles in a $1/$3 game, since a typical opening is probably going to be in the $10-15 range. But I agree in a $1/$1 or $1/$2 game you will want that 2nd rack.

A bunch of cardrooms in the SF area use only $5 and $100s, which I find to be super annoying. It's so time consuming for the dealer to verify bets and slows the game down so much. Don't the dealers and cardrooms want more hands per hour for more rake/tips?

If I'm hosting a smaller 1/2 game, I'll deploy 6 racks of red, and a larger $1/2 or $2/3, I usually deploy 4 racks of red and 3 racks of green before introducing black chips. I find that it's usually enough reds to make chips feel plentiful while avoiding monster stacks.
