So I'm designing my first set of custom chips and I'm torn on whether to add a denomination or not. I think the denominations would look good on a tournament set but I like the idea of also being able to use them for cash games. Thoughts? I'm sure if I spend enough time on this site I'll end up purchasing a set for each :)

That's the way I'm leaning

I like the way you think.

I to often have newbies playing that not only don't know that a green is typically $25, but also telling them once, twice or three times is still not enough. So..... I wrote 25 on the chip. However, I DID NOT include a $.
I feel like this gives me the ability to use that chip as a $25 chip in tournament play and as a .25 cent chip for cash games if I wanted.

Just my .02

Here's a thread from a few days ago with the same question and lots of explanation why you should get denominations on all or most of your chips.

I didn’t get denoms on my first set for this reason and I regret it.
I can't think of a single good reason to have an entire set (custom) with no denoms. Yes, there are a couple of cool existing sets, but we're talking a new custom set here. I'd rather have two cheaper sets, one for cash and one for tournament, than one really nice set that's doing double or triple duty.

I have two custom ceramic sets, 1 with, 1 without (almost) my two fav chips are non denom'd

It depends on the crowd, if you're running an underground game or only playing with a bunch of players and stick to a Standard then you'll be fine. If most of your players don't regularly play then denoms

I've yet to hear someone say, 'Man I wish I wouldn't have a denomination on this chip!'

You can see my sets in the sig, also, welcome, check out that New Members page too!

I have 2 full sets of non denominated chips and have never had any problems.
Another data point here. My main set is non-denominated, and there have been zero problems among both regular and infrequent players.

Now, I might not recommend that you forgo denominations if you have that option, but some of the concerns here are a bit overblown. It's fine.

Some are describing their personal experiences. How is that overblown?

Keep in mind, the OP is asking regarding creating a new custom set, not buying an existing set that was originally made without denoms. There are lots of cool sets out there that were designed without denoms. A couple that I would by myself if I had the opportunity. I don't think anyone is knocking those sets. We're just saying that if you're creating a set from scratch, there are very few good reasons not to put denoms on the chips.

Denominations with the dollar sign. I'm not planning to move abroad anytime soon :)

Also, when in doubt just buy more chips/sets.

Are you trying to replicate the casino experience for your players, so they might feel comfortable playing in a casino??

If so, how many casinos use non-denominated chips?

If not, as long as they're happy playing, who cares?

So you're saying you wouldn't want to play a game with my Dragonaras? :)

I'm probably bringing them to ATX and may get a micro stakes game going if I find any takers. Those yellow with orange are my nickels and they are pure leaded joy...

Would I play with them? Sure I would, but it's just not my preference to own a set without the proper denominations. It just makes the game run smoother.

I was just messing with you. I think they are pretty clear. £5 = $5 and £1 = $1. Everyone gets used to it pretty quickly.

1. Why are there two of these threads going at the same time?

2. Are your players able to remember the meaning of colors for more than 15 seconds, or are they infants?

I haven't conducted a scientific study or anything, but it's been my observation that the ability to remember chip denominations is inversely proportional to the amount of alcohol consumed. ;)
