Sadly, the liquor laws in Tennessee are atrocious.
I learned a few things when we attempted to buy a wine/liquor store about 15 years ago...
- Tennessee is a dry state. However, if individual counties choose to be wet, they may sell alcohol. However, by default, it is a dry state.
- Some individual counties (including the one where I was looking to buy) are dry - again by default. However, the county will allow a individual cities within it to become wet.
- Even though the state is dry, they have restrictions on any alcohol sales. One of those restrictions include distributors. As in, a store can only purchase from one of two distributors OK'ed by the state. From what I can tell, the OK comes on the heels of a huge political contribution. It certainly does follow in the wake of "great selection". Therefore, getting something less common is near impossible. There are liquors that we now travel out of state to get, because we can't get them here anymore - because neither of the two distributors carry it.
