Does anyone around these parts cycle? (1 Viewer)

Had a laugh about the blue spew hahaha.

Always the jokester, and not afraid to make fun of myself, I told the guys (that didn't see it) that I "blue chunks". This got a rousing laugh from the guys who saw me spew ...

Trihonda, it's looking great! Stealth black is so cool. I'm glad you're loving it. Had a laugh about the blue spew hahaha.

Years ago before I had any fitness I was racing a mate DH and was so desperate to not let him catch me I spewed the yogurt I consumed prior to the ride. He was right behind me and copped it to the chest hahaha.

Road or mountain? Either way, might be worth trying some flat pedals for a ride or two as it allows you to change foot position through out the ride. Might help you diagnose the knee problem.

Road.

I think I've sorted it now. Just having a week off to let my knee recover. I think my cleats positioned my foot too close to the pedal and I've also pointed it out a little as my feet are proper weird and point out.

MTB in Boulder, CO

Actually I started the trail in Lyons, and ended up in Boulder.

2 hour ride that took 3 hours. A grueling 8 mile ascent over rocky terrain (that never allowed you to get the speed necessary to clear most of the rocky technical sections). The ascent took 2.5 hours, and included rest stops. The descent took maybe 15 minutes... The new bike made the descent easy.

I took some awesome video of the descent. When I get home, I'll edit and post it. For now here's a pic of the ride up.

OK, kinda lame without music or anything... But here's a bit of my ascent and part of the descent:

Bumping a great thread about biking... anyone new get into biking? Any new bikes?

I hate to Necro a thread but I also don't want to make a new one when one exists.

I've been a casual bike rider for years. Just taking my beater Walmart mountain bike for rides with the kids. Last year I injured my wrist lifting weights and I've since then also developed a hip issue. Walking/jogging/running is extremely painful now. I stopped doing any kind of exercise for months and gained about 35 pounds. I've really gotta get back into exercising so I started biking more for exercise. I've been going for just over an hour everyday. I'm only a month into this and I'm really enjoying it. I've been doing roughly 15-16 miles a day. I'm working my way up to increase my endurance and my goal is to ride a local bike trail called Tunnel Hill trail. From start to finish it's 55 miles long.

One thing that's become painfully clear is my beater mountain bike isn't ideal for road or paved surface riding, besides the fact that it's a rough ride that shifts roughly. I need a new bike. I'm hoping to upgrade to something decent but I'm not looking to spend 2 grand or anything. A friend of mine is big into cycling, he owns several very high dollar bikes. He has recommended a few features to look for. One is to shoot for a hybrid bike instead of a road or mountain specific bike. Second he said to look for one with 29" wheels. Third he says to look for front shocks or suspension I'm not sure what it's called. Lastly he says to get one with disc brakes. Personally I don't know. So I thought I might see what some of you guys suggest. Either features to look for or if you have specific brands or models I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

I’m not an avid rider by any stretch, but was in a similar situation as you 10 years ago or so when the $250 sporting good store off the rack bike wasn’t cutting it. To much weight, cheap parts, etc.

I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a new high end bike either.

So I ended up buying a used Cannondale from eBay. It is much lighter, shifts smoother and flies like the wind.

I mostly ride on the road or paved trails in the metro parks.

I guess my point is a good used quality name brand bike is going to be a huge improvement no matter what features it has.

Here is my bike, 10+ years later and still going strong.

Lol at those bars and stem. Sorry Adam but that's the equivalent of mixing rhc overlabels, with some China clay fracs and bud Jones $20s.

I'm tilted. Sorry about that lol Are we still friends  :ROFLMAO:

if I had any idea what that meant I might take offense to it. Thankfully I don’t.

I'd recommend going with a used CX or gravel bike made of Reynolds 853 or True Temper OX Platinum steel frame tubing that can accommodate tire up to 38mm or more. This tubing gets the bike weight down into the 18-21lb range.... Salsa Colossal, Gary Fisher Presidio or Lemond Poprad are great bikes that can be found for anywhere between $300 - $1000. Anyways these types of bikes are great on road, gravel, trail etc..and you'll appreciate a lighter bike.

There's so many things to consider when buying a bike it's kinda ridiculous.

Your friend has some good recommendations, I'd suggest something along those lines. A hybrid or "Gravel Bike" will allow you to roll much better on asphalt and still handle some dirt and gravel trails a little rougher terrain and all are gonna be with 29"/700c wheels. A budget will help determine further recommendations, but you're probably going to be looking to spend at least $1000-1500, though buying lightly used will probably be your best bet, find something that's been maintained well. Some more info about these trails that you're riding will be helpful as well. Finding the correct sized bike as well as getting at least closely fit by a bike shop will help ensure that you're in a comfortable riding position, and make sure to find a saddle (seat) that is going to be comfortable for you and some padded bike shorts.

Picked this SC Hightower up a few months ago, have only gotten out 9-10 times, but I love it so far!

Good comfortable saddle is critical. Men's Bikearoo saddle are super comfy (no shorts needed) and can be had on Amazon for $49. I have them on all but one of my bikes. I also recommend Brooks Flyer but it's pricey and does require some breaking-in. I've had one on my other bike that I ride weekly for the past 20yrs and it's fits like a glove.

All good info from everyone so far. Budget will probably be less than $1000. I'd prefer to be under $700. I've already spent too much money in the last month and I'm trying to resist any urges to sell poker chips to fill the hole in my savings account.

As for the trail. This is it Tunnel Hill State Trail that's the goal but it wouldn't be my daily ride. My daily ride is more streets, sidewalks, harder packed dirt, gravel. Nothing super soft and mostly level. I like the idea of a hybrid bike because it gives me more options and anything is going to be a huge upgrade over what I'm using right now.

Interesting I came across this thread here!

I bought this Cannondale Rush 600 in 2006 and ended up hardly riding it. (Got married, bought a house that I worked on, started a job I traveled for, etc). Its in near mint condition. I had considered selling at times but it’s cool looking and an American made Cannondale. So I’ve decided to update it and start riding with my two younger sons. Probably mostly on the street but maybe some single track and easier stuff near by. The suspension is holding air and seems to work fine. (I understand these Lefty shocks aren’t the easiest to service)

After spending the last week trying to close the learning gap of 15 years I’ve decided on this and was wondering people’s thoughts:
-Update the cranks and bottom bracket
-Go to a SRAM NX 1x 12 drivetrain the works with my freehub
-Hybrid dirt/road tires (already bought them)
-Go tubeless
-Flat peddles (the peddles pictures were put on to test the bike out. It had clipless but I just just bought some crank brothers flats)
-Dropper post

Second phase of possibilities
-27.5” wheels (evidently this frame works perfect for that conversion)
-hydraulic brakes

Well, glad I saw this thread! Fellow road cyclist myself, but like to dabble in gravel biking when the weather’s less ideal and always hit up the XC trails back home near Banff/Canmore whenever I’m home for a visit.

Pretty spoiled for road options here in Switzerland and Europe in general - it’s a road cyclist’s paradise really.

Didn’t get out as much as I would have like last year due to everything with COVID, but a bunch of us have a guys weekend planned for July - 4 days in Bormio, Italy which I’m pretty excited for.

Generally I like longer rides with lots of up and down, and I try to get out for at least one multi-day trip a year.

Lost my favorite road bike last year (Cervelo R5) to a house fire while on vacation and haven’t replaced it yet. Luckily I still have a decent Trek Domane and an OPEN WI.DE gravel bike to play around on :)

If anyone here is on Strava, got me up! https://www.strava.com/athletes/9099059

Bumping an old topic....

After being inside too long...it was time to start getting active again.
I needed something to do in my work space besides milling chips & starting to relabel a few sets (+6000 labels from Chris waiting)...

My last bike build was a full rebuild and a real moneypit...the usual buying a diamond in the rough for $300 and spending 2K to make it functional again.
Now I wanted another diamond (fully) but this time higher investment in the bike & lower additional cost (or none).
I checked some stuff out but buying new was not an option (budget wise & stock wise)...and due to the lack of stock in bikes & parts, the second hand market is (still) crazy.

I browsed the classifieds for a while and checked out some offers...after a few disappointments I found my next bike last weekend.
She was one sorry looking puppy when I got her but below that tarnished surface....there is the diamond I wanted...below the budget (but not much ;) )
And all is well...she just needs TLC so will strip & rebuild everything (work in progress)
I'll post some pr0n asap

Anyone else back on the bike, looking for a new one or rebuilding now spring is around the corner ?
