Earthquakes and Volcano in Iceland (2 Viewers)

In 2019 we had one claim 22 lives

The Volcano (Netflix) tells this story

I hope you stay safe
This one is on a great location far away from everything and there is a 10km Hike to it, it is closed at the moment but that Hike will be opened when it calms down and goes steady.

Like New Zealand we have some that can pose a great threat like history shows but this is not one of them. I will need to check out that documentary

ps this is one hardcore photo

People have been asked not to go the volcano due to poison gasses and more cracks can open.

I’m starting to think we might be in trouble if people don’t start behaving…

I've been seeing some of the videos online, pretty awesome! Also, people are stupid. If they can't listen to the experts because they want to get a selfie with lava then we don't need those people anyway. Same goes for all the morons that want to pet a buffalo in Yellowstone. I secretly enjoy the hell out of people getting attacked by wild animals just because they want a picture.

Walking paths have been marked and we have our rescue squad helping on the area. It is a 10km hike each way so we ask people to come prepared. We also ask people not to go to close, I would qualify this as way to fucking close!

Ps I’m safe on my sofa not a madman. But another photo here if the crater bursts like they often do when growing, then flowing Lava moves like water… People are just standing there with kids

So last one did not last very long. But as everyone in Iceland has realized now is that Reykjanes Peninsula is on active duty, when it was active last time is was on and off for 30 years on multiple locations. It was called Reykjanes Eldar or the Flames of Reykjanes.

Now we have a more worrying situation than last three, we had a faster rise in land so the volume of magma is raising quicker underground, this would lead to a bigger eruption if it stays the same pace. Last time we were hoping the magma would not move from where it looked to be coming up. Now it is the opposite, PLEASE MOVE before you erupt dear volcano. Current location where the pressure is building is close to a town, energy/water infrastructure and the blue lagoon might be in danger.

When I say danger then I don´t mean that it would be a very dangerous eruption for people as it is quite slow to go around in the beginning this is not an explosive volcanic area. So people would be able to leave in few hours to a day but everything left behind could be in danger.

While geologically fascinating…hot spot on a mid-ocean ridge…this sucks.

I hope everyone stays safe.

My guess is the blue lagoon might get a little too toasty for human flesh.

If everything still goes to plan, then I’ll try to smuggle in some live crawfish….should be perfect for them.

You can cook grouse in them!! From our last trip, right outside the hotel window

Even without erupting, both the earthquakes and the earth rising. It can change or damage the geothermal activity in area, that could affect both the Blue Lagoon and the power station there.

When they say "people" I assume they mean the people of Grindavik? I seem to recall that area as being pretty sparsely populated (except for the Blue Lagoon).

There are around 3700 people in Grindavik but around 30.000 on the peninsula total, including the main international airport of Iceland. Grindavik would need to evacuate but the rest of the peninsula could lose power and water, that is a very bad combo in winter time.

Right now we just hope that the activity stops or moves to a better location…

So activity is ongoing, both land and anxiety levels are rising. Mountain in the area has risen at least 7cm over two weeks. ( Barrel of CPC)

The activity is still bound to a very unfortunate area and we still hope for it to change Systems to Fagradalsfjall again

Current rate it is assume that the magma pocket that is 4km under the surface is 6 million cubic meters in volume and growing 7 cubic meters every second.

Eviction plans are being set in place finally and also actions to remotely control the power plant in the area. There is an ongoing debate if the Blue Lagoon should be closed or not.

I think it is no brainier to close the lagoon, if the magma can travel at 20km/hour you don’t want to be close proximity.

...or just stay in the lagoon. As the lava/magma reaches the lagoon, it cools the molten rock.

Then it's a challenge to see who can stay in the water the longest as it approaches boiling!

Some experts say that worst case scenario the magma would only take 3 minutes to reach the lagoon. I hereby deny that challenge.

Alert has been raised to danger level and flights on orange!

This is some pretty freaky stuff! Stay safe!

If evacuations reach as far as Hafnarfjordur, know you and your family have a place to stay in Tennessee.

I know this is a scary time for many, but it’s also amazing to watch these geological events from afar. I just hope everyone stays safe and an is able to quickly recover from any loss/damage. Thanks for sharing and my heart goes out to those impacted.

So far everybody is safe and no real danger to people. It seems it has started to break the way to the top on a little bit better place but no certainty yet.

Iceland has started construction on a 3 billion safety wall around the power plant and the blue lagoon.

people are leaving Grindavik, one road is closed and water pipes have burst in some places. Every available contractor with a big machinery has been asked to help create the barrier wall. So far 10 companies have responded.

This crack goes through the down and damaged an old people home that is being evacuated as water pipes burst and is flooding.

Magma still not to been seen
