ExPats Where you at? (1 Viewer)

I have an ex-pat friend living in Costa Rico right now (and for the past 8-9 years or so). She loves it. I also know a co-worker that has bought property in CR.

I haven't researched it myself, but that seems to be pretty hot for stretching retirement dollars.

You coming to live in Portugal would be awsome bro....

Don't forget healthcare...I think Portugal trumps the other options on that too.
And EU meet-ups :)

No Mexico? That's my plan as it's close to my family and friends in Canada, eh. I'm tentatively heading down to Baja next year for some months.

I'd consider Mexico, but I want to go somewhere that I can drink the water.

You're very helpful

I’m with you Craig but have 6 more years to get the youngest through college before I make the move. Currently planning on summers in the UK and winters in Malaysia.

I would visit a few places to see if you would be happy there for extended periods of time before making the decision. Malaysia was my first expat job and where I met my wife so it has a pull. I still have friends there and when I visit it’s like I never left. That makes it very attractive. It’s also very affordable, high quality affordable healthcare and a good jumping off point for travel through Asia. You also don't need to learn the language as most people speak English. But also you’d be living in a city for all the infrastructure. You can visit the beaches on the weekend but living on a beach means you’d have to simplify your lifestyle.

Europe is vast and you can get cheap living in Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy while also enjoying nice weather. To really enjoy it though you’d have to learn the language. Yes, everyone speaks English in the big cities but big cities are not cheap living. Definitely visit and find a place you like.

The Caribbean for island life is expensive. I did that for 4 years and spent more than I did living in Texas. But island life is sweet… I have a few friends who have retired there but they have money.

I know nothing about South America but the people I know who spend a lot of time there are all fluent Spanish speakers.

Happy to chat more if you’d like. But don’t take this decision quickly - it’s a big move and every place has positives and negatives. There are things about Malaysia and the UK that frustrate the hell out of me, just like there are things here that do the same.

I don't see anyone talking about renouncing their citizenship. Just retiring oversees.

Some people are that concerned about things, they don’t even eant to be considered Americans anymore.
But you are most likely right, they probably want the continued privileges and benefits without the worry about how they continue to receive them or the participation in our country.
Sounds about right for the times - “if things don’t go my way IMMEDIATELY then I’m not participating anymore, I’m canceling the whole country”.

And then they wonder what “went wrong”.

That may be more a political discussion. This thread is focused on discussing places to retire.

Mallorca, Crete, Malta

for more remote vibe and higher temperatures fo to Ceuta or Melilla (fantastic places, especially if you like arab food, good booze and exeptional weed)

You could emigrate to Coastal Delaware. No sales taxes, 3rd lowest property taxes in country, no tax on retirement income, periodic home to Joe Biden, and generally full of people who feel similarly to you, politically. The climate is only bad 2 months of the year, and great 4. And meh the others.

Getting any construction done is hard and overall similar to challenges you’d encounter in Caribbean islands.

Town politics are similar to national politics, but more personal, less civil, and generally full of sexual innuendo. Outside of incorporated towns it’s pretty normal.

Seriously, maybe consider downsizing your footprint here - you still have family and friends you will want to see from time to time - and then get 3-6 month work visas in various places, and you can check them out for long term viability.
Maybe also consider a cruise in any areas of the world you may be considering? You can see some of the cities and talk to people that live there.

As they say often here, get samples
