Hey guys from Toronto ontario and I recently started getting back into poker and I'd like to invest in a nice quality set that I will have for many years to come. I had a set of Monte Carlo and the stickers were starting to peel on some so I decided to toss them and sell the remaining set. I don't mind paying for quality but I need some honest opinions, I also hate those stickers in the middle I guess my only option is ceramic right ?
Budget is about 1000 CAD or usd equivalent
Any insight would be great , and ive watched a few YouTube videos on this subject. Thanks so much everyone.

Welcome! That budget is more than enough, take your time. Post some more and you'll get access to the Classifieds, lots of good deals on here that are far better than the Monte Carlos. Get some samples and feel them, keep your Monte Carlos for now while you plot and plan.

Many clay chips, whether casino used or from CPC (fully custom clay chips), have that sticker as an "inlay" instead; don't worry about that coming out without an exacto knife. Same with most of the labels I've applied, there's a recess in the chip where the sticker can lay, not easy to get them out without trying.

^^This 100%.

For $1k (give or take, maybe a little more) you can get a nice set to start off with that you could continue to build on as your needs grow.

Lol, or you can buy a better set than 99% of the planet and run the fuck outta here, perfectly happy to dominate the home games you're going to host. RUN MAN RUN!

Welcome! There are great chips that have "stickers" in the middle, known as inlays, that are nearly impossible to remove. The Paulson casino chips that you'll find in the classifieds mostly came from casinos that have retired them. Some of them have never been used (casino secondaries). If you are patient and expand your budget just a bit you'll be surprised by the nice chips you'll be able to score.

Keep posting and you'll soon have classified/direct messaging privileges. At that point, it's just how deep down the hole you choose to go.

Good luck!

You won't have a problem with stickers peeling on chips from Paulson, BCC or CPC. The cheap China Clays maybe.

You're better off asking specific questions... you didn't say anything about how many chips you need or whether you host cash games or tournaments, etc. There's a wealth of knowledge and some very friendly people that would be willing to help you learn, but it'd be a challenge to dispense any advice without some context first.

What kinda set u looking for tourny or cash? Stakes # of ppl?
1k is a good price but can vary.

I am looking for a 1000 piece set , with the denoms of

1 - 250
5 - 250
25 - 250
100 - 200
500 - 50

I have an 8 man table but I like to seat 7 comfortably. My father's a heavier set man and he feels 8 is just a bit too crowded.

I want to host tournaments and cash games and I feel like that set there would be perfect to accommodate both playing styles.

Browse and read/absorb for a month or two.

Trust me. You’ll avoid the fuck ups, and make better decisions.

Also. Buy lead, don’t be a bitch. :ROFLMAO:

Welcome to the jungle! Try not to buy every second set you see posted like me lately!

You can find yourself a great starter set at $1000cdn which is around $750USD. I say starter set as most Paulson and CPC sets with those dominations will be much more expensive.

Unfortunately exchange, shipping and duty are working against you as a Canadian. I’ve had a few sets in that price range before finally landing on Paulsons

Best of the group for me was a set of Br Pro ceramics. You can build a great set and potentially add on some higher denominations if you want to cover tourney and cash.

The Royals and Majestics from Apache get rave reviews. I had the Royals briefly but was never thrilled with them. They and the Majestics would fit in your price range.

I’ve seen a lot of great feedback on the TINA Greek molds found in the group buys here on PCF.

For me personally I wish I could have skipped all the other sets and just waited until a nice used set of Paulsons was within my budget. Saved all the time and money lost but hey it’s process!

I assuming your stake is likely 1/2 or 1/3?

If you are investing in a 1000 piece, it will be better to put 600-800 chip in cash set and 300-400 chip in a tourney set.

Using one set for multi-purpose is generally regards as no-no over here, and for some reason, a lot of new members like to make hybrid set.

600- 800 chips can cover Cash Set.

1/2 to 1/3 Stake
$1 x 100 - 200
$5 x 200 - 300
$25 x 100 - 200
$100 x 80 + $500 x 20

You can have your pick from T5, T25, T100 or T500 with 400 chips build

T5
$5 x 100
$25 x 100
$100 x 100
$500 x 100

T25
$25 x 120
$100 x 120
$500 x 50
$1k x 75
$5k x 35

T100
$100 x 100
$500 x 60
$1k x 120
$5k x 120

T500
$500 x 100
$1k x 100
$5k x 100
$25k x 100

I'm also located in Toronto, and also considering buying Royal/Majestic Cardrooms possibly from this site. Not sure if it'd be worth to step up to a CPC set. Looking to host a bit for around 8 people and not too sure how many chips/denominations I should buy.

Also another general question regarding shipping and buying as a Canadian, would there be customs/taxes due to buying chips from US? Just feel like theres not many vendors in Canada for poker chips other than Amazon.

Depends on what you're buying. You can't get away from GST and provincial tax. There should be no duties if you can prove that chips are manufactured in USA (such as Paulsons, BCC, TRK, ASM/CPC, etc.). Everything else is a crapshoot and depends on value of goods and the proclivities of the customs agent.

Don't buy anything chip-related from Amazon.

Yeah learned my lesson after buying some Monte Carlos from Amazon. Im looking to buy some CPCs possibly but if I just order from the site im not sure if I’m going to be hit with taxes. The duties are prettty expensive at about 1/3 of the total last I remember. Probably better to get it second hand unless anyone else thinks otherwise or has any other ideas.

Brpropoker has great chips and can even help a little with the design but if you don’t have a design at all then you will need a graphic designer.

Tina on Alibaba (I can give you her contact if you need) is probably the best ceramics for the price. Also, you can jump on Justin C’s (I can give you the link if you need) group buy if you don’t want to deal with Alibaba. It’s probably cheaper too but not sure if they ship to Toronto.

Chip lab is also another good custom seller but I don’t have any experience with them.

Discountpokershop and thepokerstore are great sites for loose poker chips, meaning you can mix and match or pick which demons you want.

And of course you can get samples from any of those places before you buy.

Chris Manzoni and Hobbyphilic have great videos on YT but you probably have seen them already.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I looked at many chip sets when I first joined and like you I had previous chips purchased from Straight Poker Supplies in Ontario.
The cash club chips actually weren't completely terrible but pretty much any chips on this site will be a step up or three for sure. Your budget will allow you to be proactive in securing a nice set.
As mentioned, you want 2 types of chips, a cash set and a tournament set.
My regulars convinced me to go to cash games, since everyone can play as long as they want, and not have to ho home early when they bust out in tournament play. I got rid of all my tourney sets that I had accumulated, but they were terrible chips, so no loss there.
As also mentioned, the best bang for your $$ is the monthly group buys.
That is where I purchased my chips.
I live about 1.5 hours from the US border, so I get my poker items sent to a parcel depot using a personal US address that they assign to you, and I pick up the items when we go over for a weekend, so we can both claim $800 in merchandise.
The parcel depot charges $3.00 per parcel and will keep them there for months I'd needed.
You must be able to do that in or around Niagara Falls. I'm sure they have parcel depots just across the rainbow Bridge.
Good Luck with your chip quest.

@LeLe is right, you should be looking at two separate sets...cash and tournament shouldn't share the same design. Someone palms a couple of $25 from your tournament set and drops them in your cash game can become a problem.

Depending on the stakes you're going to play, you can probably get by with a 600-700 pc cash set. Do some more research here in the forum, and you'll get a better feel for what works from experience, you can save yourself a lot of headache by letting others take the guesswork out.
