I have searched and searched and cannot find the answer to my questions. I am buying a set of chips for my soon to be 20 year old son. I want closest to casino look/feel, but am trying to also save money. I've pretty much decided on 10 gram clay composite (I'm pretty sure.) Anyway, he only plays penny games, a quarter is a HUGE bet. I thought the best answer was a non-denom chip, but I see that many recommend against it. I've been researching since December and his birthday is in May. Any suggestions? I'm looking at Claysmith or Majestics, but just can't seem to pull the trigger. I was going to get a set of 500, but now think that might be overkill. He plays 4 - 8 players, with an occasional extra. Please help a mom out!

Yes Welcome. Please let us all know what your budget is. Also once you get enough posts you can always put a wanted ad in the classifieds. There are many on here that have some good sets that they may be willing to sell.

IN that time frame take a close look at the majestic line thru @Apache. Get blanks and contact @Gear for some custom labels. @p5woody, @Quicksilver-75, and @PokerChipsDesign could prob help some design help for the labels if needed (@Johnny5 is another option but I understand he is back logged for several months). If you can give him an a rain check the bud jones hybrids should be ready in a few months

Yeah for those denoms you will need custom labels which equals higher cost. What about non denom chips where they can value the colors as they wish?

$25 buyins can work for a 25c/25c game. Why not get the Poker nights (15c / chip) or if you want something nicer, look at the Milanos (30c / chip). The Majestics are even nicer but expensive.

.....I thought the best answer was a non-denom chip, but I see that many recommend against it.....
Who is recommending against it? I would highly recommend a non-denom set. Makes it easy to grow with (he won't be playing pennies forever)

If I were you I would go with a set like the Claysmith sets, Majestics, and some other good cheep china clays. They might be from China and not real clays but the plastic lasts very well they are heavy and colorful.

I personally would not go with non-denom. I would multiply the buy-in with by 10. So 10$ buy in gives you 100 in chips, then you can play as low stakes as the want and when the stakes go up they just have to cut down on the multiplyer

I don't know where you will find a set with a chip so there will have to be at least one non-denom in the set.
Maybe start out with some blank china clays and he could label them sometime in future

I'd caution against non-denom chips as well. They're a pain to keep track of what each is worth. The best solution for actual penny stakes (1c/2c blinds) is to play at 1c= $1. You can use $1, $5, $25, $100 and $500 chips, just played at 1% of face value.

I'd look at a breakdown like this:

100 x $1
200 x $5
100 x $25
50 x $100
50 x $500

That's an actual bank of $336, which is fine for a full table of college kids playing with laundry money. Poker Knights, Milanos and Majestics are all options, depending on budget and personal preference.

probably add china clay Pharaoh's to this too.

I currently have a non denom set and I dont like it. Too difficult for drunk guys to remember whats going on, myself included hahaha. Thats why Im getting a denom set.

What he means is, it's too difficult to remember what's going on when you've been so busy studying and finishing your homework before playing poker... right?

i think the OP wants something quick and cheap without alot of thought needed....maybe have one chip non denom for pennys and then denoms of nickles and quarters, i was thinking the CPS chips, those are the lowest price i know anything about

@BGinGA - He should be here to help you very soon with every suggestion under the sun. Welcome to the forum.

Do you feel like adopting a new son? I'm past those tough "20s" and like Paulsons.
HAHAHA! - Actually, I'm making a guitar case into a poker case - very excited about it. Have spent WAY more money on this project than I ever intended, but, since it's been split up, I hardly notice (til I want a mani/pedi, food, cable, you know!)

I love that everybody is not bashing the non-denom idea. I actually thought for a minute about getting customs for .01, .05, .10 and .25, but like many have mentioned, he won't be playing pennies forever. So, you guys think that non-denoms are fine? That really is my first choice.

If you are going to invest in a 'better than strictly necessary' poker chip set, buying a set that will age well is a good idea. For that reason, a non-denom or 'multiplier' set is ideal. It will create much more utility than custom penny chips that won't be useful for many years and may be hard to re-sell.

Quick and cheap is a trip to Walmart. It seems like @Glae is more interested in economical quality.
Exactly - if I wanted the go-to 11.5 or 14 gram, I could get them from WalMart, eBay, Target, just about anywhere, but I'm really stuck on getting him the biggest bang for the buck. He, most likely, won't even get the 10 gram until he visits his first casino, but I want him to get the feel of the chips, the sound of the chips (especially!) Just know - if I had the money to buy Paulsen's, Paulsen's are what he'd have. BTW - as far as my budget - I'd like to come in under $300 for just chips (I've got the cards, case, even some nice dice and acrylic holders.) No one has mentioned how many chips they think I should get. Are there any opinioins out there?

I really like the idea of getting the $1, $5, $25, $100, $500 set, and using them as .01, .05, etc.

In my experience this tends to work very well.

Also, if stakes ever go up, add a .25 chip and then pay at face value. This will make the set last much longer.

I would make one small tweak to @atomiktoaster recommended chip count:

100 x 1
200 x 5
100 x 25
60 x 100
40 x 500

Since chips are often stored in racks that hold 20 per barrel, this will store better (at least in the minds of many chip fanatics).

The chips in this price bracket are sold in rolls of 25, generally. That's why I broke it down 50/50.

Errmmm, absolutely.
So happy you clarified this, whew! My college age son would certainly never drink an alcoholic beverage while enjoying an evening of poker (or studying, or breathing.) Before I get in trouble for this - I promise, this is sarcasm, lol. I hate that I have to explain that, but my sarcasm never reads well on the computer and people tend to take me too seriously.

So, no .10 chips? (or $10 chips?) Y'all are helping me out so great! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! And, do most people agree that I should get 500, or is that too many?

A 4x or 5x jump in value from one chip to the next is the best balance . You can skip from $5 to $25 directly. 500 is a little more than you strictly need for a single table in general, but you need to be able to handle exceptionally deep stacks when you include a penny chip. Even kids will show up with $20 and want to play in college, which is like showing up to a $1/$2 table in a casino with $2000. A lot of places would limit you to $500 or less.

Ah yes, I had lost site of that.

The last time I bought cheap chips (dunes commemoratives) I did not order in 25 chip increments, and they had no problems shipping partial rolls.

Maybe the Desert Palm chips at Apache? They are between the dice chips and china clays, have both denom and non-denom options, and are affordable.

Another option may be the Venerati ceramics at Sidepot.

2 penny BBs is a $2 buy in right? You sure your son doesn't want to roll 25c/25c?
