Good chip for son (1 Viewer)

I know you saw my earlier post, but yeah, those paulsons will hold way more resale value, have far cooler history, are far better materials, and may even appreciate. They will cover his immediate game as well.

I vote Paulson or TRK.

Also, don't just buy the paulsons without thinking about the TRKs. The TRKs are every bit the real deal, and a lot of us prefer them over paulsons. Some of the TRK sets owned by members here are among the most admired in the hobby.

Agree with Chicken Rob's assessment of T.R.King chips, too -- they are every bit as nice as the Paulson set, and I'm typically a Paulson snob when it comes to high-end chips. Both will hold and likely appreciate in value over time.

Some additional info: Paul Endy Jr. was the General Manager of T.R.King before he started Paul-Son..... as was his father before him. TRK produced casino-quality chips from 1922 until 2007. Lots of great history with the old Reno chip sets......those TRK chips for sale date back to the 1960s and 1970s, just prior to before the Paul-Son company was founded.

The TRK chips also clean up great, and TRKs for $1/chip is a real bargain. A nice set in super-clean condition can easily sell for twice the asking price of those two sets.

I am biased, but I would get that 300 chip set of Nevada Lodge TRK. They clean up beautifully, easy to add on to in the future, and those quarter pie $1s are just sweet!!

I appreciate you luckbox! I think I don't want only 2 denominations. this is so confusing!!! I'm guessing no one is offering any to me cause my budget is so low. Everyone has been so helpful!

I'm gonna muddy the water a little bit. The TRKs and paulsons in your price range appear to be in casino used condition. For some, this becomes undesirable. The chips wear thinner when heavily used in a casino, and it gets more difficult to count them by measuring stacks against each other, or by how they fit in a rack.

I have some heavily used paulsons that fit 21 to a barrel instead of 20.

Just another something to consider.

New condition paulsons or TRKs will hold up just fine in a lifetime of play in a home game, but the around the clock usage in a casino takes its toll.

@Glae -- I may have found the perfect set for you. Brand new chips, casino quality on a classic mold, more than just two denominations, and priced right at $300 for 400+ chips.

Please contact me via private conversation, as I don't want to list it here only to have someone else snatch it out from under you.

I really like the idea of getting the $1, $5, $25, $100, $500 set, and using them as .01, .05, etc.

In my experience this tends to work very well.

Also, if stakes ever go up, add a .25 chip and then pay at face value. This will make the set last much longer.

I would make one small tweak to @atomiktoaster recommended chip count:

100 x 1
200 x 5
100 x 25
60 x 100
40 x 500

Since chips are often stored in racks that hold 20 per barrel, this will store better (at least in the minds of many chip fanatics).

This is a good breakdown, very similar to what i have and it does store better. I have the Compression Dunes commemoratives from the Chip Room, great first set at a decent price and they look great (in my opinion) even the cheaper Injection moulded Dunes would be a great first set.

BGinGa - I pm'd you, waiting patiently for your response. I hope I haven't already said that, lol, I looked through, but couldn't find me mentioning it before right now.

Just to thank everyone for all of your expertise - I wanted to let y'all know, I got the Freddie's Paulson chips! 300 set, 125 1's, 125 5's, 25 25's and 25 100's. Thanks for suggesting Spinettis - they are GREAT!!! My son (better) will be so happy - now to research Freddie's so I can give him some history on the chips.
