I asked a knowledgeable vendor about Greektown Casino chips. Greektown is in Detroit and will soon be rebranded as Jack's Casino.

I was told "Greektown chips will be destroyed. Very rarely do any chips make it to the home market."

I am a newbie, but I thought there were many defunct chips on the home market. I can understand a casino destroying their chips if they are buying new ones and don't want old ones floating around which somebody might try to cash in. But if they are closing, why not sell the chips and bag the cash? In the case of rebranding, I suppose somebody might come in a couple years later and try to cash them in. That's is probably why some do the obnoxious drilling and hot stamping.

They are cool chips. I was hoping to have a shot at some.

They will have to bury them with nuclear and biohazard waste. They were pretty used and nasty on the tables.

The law varies state to state. For instance, Nevada requires them to be destroyed while states like Washington and Missouri do not.

Regarding coming back and trying to cash them in, the law/rules are always in the casinos favor and they don't need to cash anything if you come years later and expect value. Some casinos will give you a deadline to cash in chips while others just close and GTFO.

Except in the more civilized state of New Jersey.
