I own a dice set, bought 15 years ago. (yeah, in my country there's nothing else you could buy, even now)
They are so ugly I couldn't play with them too much. Now I'm divorced, moved to another town, found some old friends, met new ones and I'm very keen to get those poker nights back. Well, it seems it's so hard to find good looking and good quality chips.
In my search, which has taken me more than 2 weeks until now, I stumbled upon a youtube clip with the Aurora Star chips. Wow, they are mesmerizing!
So I found this forum, and hopefully will find some nice chips that suit my needs, I mean I'll host small games, 5 people tops.

Welcome welcome! Currently the chip prices for these (Aurora Star) are at a low (possibly all time low) so great time to buy.

Kiss your wallet good bye. The chips you've fallen for are some of the more expensive chips. You will find tons of different styles that will surprise and disappoint. There is a mantra here on PCF: GET SAMPLES!
yeah,,
But I plan to do just a one time purchase :)
I already read about getting samples, I don't know if I'll have the patience to wait for samples and then wait again. Shipping will take a life time.

Great to hear that.
Wow, just saw the prices, they are expensive, I mean, average wage in my country is about 600$/month, lol
Yes new Paulsons are somewhat uncommon and will run you $2.50 per chip however there are used ones that start as low as $0.70-$0.90 per chip. If you have questions ask them on the forum. Members are eager and willing to help!

It seems I can't post there yet, but I bet he won't split in the end. I could probably only buy 2 assorted racks or so.

You can send a PM. ;)

Hello and welcome!

You haven't told us whether you play cash or tournament. This would help you set a reasonable budget.
Small tourney, (5 people, rarely 6)
I don't think I'' need more than 200 chips, something like 60x1, 80x5, 40x25(or20), 20x100
As budget I was thinking of 500$ ...maybe more

if 600 is avg salary you are going to need, 4 months salary for a nice AS set

Thanks a lot, I didn't know those were clay. They are too cheap if they are clay...
They are what is known as China clays. A cheap imitation, but not even close to the real thing IMO. Since you have the budget for a proper set, you can just skip China clays altogether.

Most people like to use tournament sets starting with the 25 denomination (T25), some with T5. A 6max set of 200 chips is very much doable, but the breakdown would depend on your needs (how deep starting stacks, rebuys, etc.).

You also might want to consider these...
https://www.apachepokerchips.com/product/monaco-poker-chips/ or these
https://www.apachepokerchips.com/product/paulson-elite-poker-chips/
I consider them a step up from the china clays like the Majestics or Milanos with out going for full bank-buster Paulsons. The tourney denoms are in stock, you can order exactly what you need and I'm pretty sure Apache ships internationally.

You can find more info and opinions here:

Welcome to the forum.
Read and see a lot before you spend a lot.
If you 're in love with the most expensive ones after having seen and considered all alternatives, wait and save.
Meanwhile, you could put some labels on dice chips (I know I might be banned for this):D

Starting with 25 is nice. 12/12/7/5, but those high denominations RHC I'm looking right now on the black friday sale are so expensive.

500 and up denominations go up in price quickly because there’s a lot less of those chips made so the supply is much smaller.

You can get a sample set from Apache. I really wanted to like these chips - great price and nice look. But put your finger on top of a stack and they slide around like crazy - similar to what your dice set does. Get a sample of Paulsons or CPC and try the same test - the chips won't budge. At that point you may as well just surrender your monies to this madness because you'll always know the difference.

Not all china clays are slippery; some are pretty solid-stacking. But yeah, the more recent plasticized versions are becoming more and more like regular plastic chips in a lot of ways.

Did you have any recent experience with Majestics?

I have or have had 'em all. The yet-to-be-delivered 43mm CCs only exception.
