Nice thought, but can you define what you mean by "charity"? Does that include any non-profit activity (specifically, the ACLU or the Canadian equivalent)?

National Brain Tumor Society

My ex's grandfather died of a brain tumor almost 20 years ago and I did a bunch of fundraising rides for them.
9 years ago, one of my dearest friends had a brain tumor removed, shortly after passing the bar exam. Because of those surgeons, she continues to be one of the baddest ass assistant district attorneys, keeping the streets safer in Boston.
A couple of weeks ago, a buddy of mine was diagnosed with a brain tumor. This guy isn't afraid to huck his mountain bike off of anything and he loves racing bmx's with his young son.
Scary stuff, having something growing inside your head.

I am in!!! What a great idea. Do I "need" the chips, YES!. Do I really need them, I guess not but, I could not pass up the chance to win a donation to my Philanthropy.

I have had the pleasure of being a Shrine Clown for almost 20 years. Those of you who are not aware of what a Shriner is or does I am going to let you know our true purpose. Yes we like to have fun but we are committed to children. We, as a fraternity own over 20 hospital throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico that provide the best care for children in our specialty areas of Orthopedics, Burn Care, Spinal Cord Injury and Cleft lip and Palate without the regard to the family's ability to pay. Yes that is correct! We provide "free" medical care to children regardless of Race, Creed, Religion or Family income and we have been doing so since 1922.

We have doctors that are in the tops of their field in Orthopedics, and the best doctors in Burn Care. In fact many of the treatments for Burns that are in use today came from the research and development done at the Shrine Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas.

We currently spend almost 2 million dollars per day in providing "Free" care for the children. Being a Clown and a Shriner I have had the pleasure of visiting a couple of our hospitals and it is really nice when you walk in to a State of the Art facility that does not even have an Accounts Receivable Department. When we say "Free" we mean "Free"! We even transport the families and pay for their stay while the child attends our hospital. Not one "Red Cent" comes from any family member.

All of our money comes from a large trust fund that we have built over the years and from generous donations from Shriners and Donations from the public. If you ever want to see what we really do at the hospitals please visit http://www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/. If you ever see fit you can also make a donation while there!

I hope to bink this raffle! @monkeydog what a great idea and a great gesture and thank you for the opportunity to contribute!

I know many of us have a charity that we are passionate about. I look forward to hearing more Stories!!! WE may call ourselves Degens but when it counts I feel there are many of us ready to give for our cause!

Let's get those stories and donations in.

Well, tough to follow that one but I'll try.

I have been on a board for the last six years, I would continue but I have reached the term limits. During my tenure the organization has gone through some changes and I feel the current strategic path they are on is a fantastic one. There is quite a bit of poverty in the City of Rochester and Cameron's hope is to provide a little assistance for those who need help getting through a rough patch and to encourage growth so that they can become independent. Yes there are those that are going to "game" the system but the goal is to break the cycle. They have a wonderful children's program and are looking to expand because they age out and unfortunately that comes at probably the worst age for a child as they enter the teen years. They have made a little headway and enrolled a few kids into two of the most well respected private schools in the area, much different than if they were with the Public school system.

Trying to keep it short, you can visit the website if you want to learn more about the other programs they provide. http://www.cameronministries.org/ I'd like to win so that I can give a nice little parting gift to them, not that I won't continue to support them in the future.

In for two not because I want to win but because I want whoever does to have that much more to give. Thanks @monkeydog for the platform/opportunity to donate! Best of luck to all who enter, there will be no loser because each organization will get the word of their mission spread outside their typical boundaries.

Cheers!

My favorite is the Boy and Girls Club, especially the local chapters. They provide a safe place for kids to come and stay after school hours and on the weekends, especially teen aged kids whose parents both work or single parent who has children who are too old for daycare but may get into trouble if left to themselves. We donate not just money but also our time and supplies to help make this a safe fun place where kids want to hang out. While I don’t teach them poker, we do donate board games and hold sessions to get them involved in thinking and strategy, teaching them planning and resource use by gameplay. Not chance based games, or shoot’em up video games, but more worker placement and games with multiple levels of analysis to make smart decisions. It’s a good feeling when you see a light bulb come on in one of their brains when they realize that by planning and wise decisions they can influence outcomes.

Thanks for the raffle, I'm in for $20 and would choose to donate to cancer research. I don't have a specific charity in mind, but would pick one if I win (maybe with some suggestions).

Story:
I am a cancer survivor, have been in remission for around 4 years. When I was diagnosed and completed surgery, I was then supposed to start chemo. The date I was supposed to start chemo was the due date of my 5yo. So my doctor didn't want me to wait. Against his advice (and wife's advice lol) I chose to wait until my second son was born. I started chemo the following week. Turned out to be somewhat good timing because my wife was on maternity leave for the time I was most in need, then went back to work when I could handle things myself.

My mother is a breast cancer survivor. Uncle (on wife's side) is going to die any day now from prostate CA (we'd be surprised if he makes it to Christmas). A good friend of mine died from colon cancer in the year 2001 and changed my outlook on life.

This is awesome. I will be in for 4 entries.

i am in law enforcement and the current trend of people towards law enforcement is surprising and shameful. I am not blind tot he fact that there are bad officers just like there are bad people in every profession. However, we are the only profession in the United States, and pretty much any other country where people try to harm us just because of our profession. We all took this job and swore our oath knowing that it was/is a dangerous profession. My charity is the Chaplain Benevolence fund within my department. (This is a non-profit and listed charity in my state) This fund helps fellow deputies who work two and three side jobs just on help provide for their family but still fall short and need help paying a bill, the fund helps with community outreach, and one of the many other service it provides is helping needy families during Christmas and other times that they need the help.

Thank you to those who still support the ones who strap on the tools of our job and the ballistic vests that we wear to help ensure that we can go home at the end of our shift.

ps: Ill provide you my department information in a PM if I win and how to send the money to the fund.

I'm in.
Great raffle idea.

There are so many good charities, and I give montly to several but I think I'm gonna go with the red cross if I win this raffle, and specifically the local stuff they do around my home town and other cities in Norway. I was volunteering for a while my self last year in teaching refugees and other immigrants Norwegian as a part of helping them integrate into the norwegian society. This is ofcourse just a tiny tiny part of what they do. The red cross is such a big organization and they do a lot of very important work both locally and globaly in both conflict time and peacetime. I really like their main principle of impartiality and neutrality.

I have the joy and challenge of working in a low income area as a middle school teacher and a coach. We have a lot of kids that like sports but can't afford to play them. It breaks my heart when a family can't afford to have a child participate in something they love. If I win, this money would go into a fund at our school to provide scholarship money so that a child will not be left out due to their financial situation.

Great idea for the raffle.

Great idea! I'll choose Be The Match, the bone marrow donor registry. They do so much work facilitating connections between volunteer donors and cancer patients who need a needle in a haystack genetic match in order to fight their disease. As a donor, I would really recommend signing up for the registry. It's free, because of funds donated to Be The Match, and all you need to do is fill out a form and swab the inside of your cheek.

I'm in.. charity would be the Alzheimer's Association.
Another utterly destructive mofo of a disease. My wife’s mother dealt with the disease for many years until her death.
My aunt has been ravaged by it for the past several years. It's a currently unstoppable, slow and torturous killer... it steals your memories, your relationships, your functions and your life... FU Alzheimers .

Awesome idea! I'm in for 4 entries.

My charity: The Against Malaria Foundation

Why: The AMF provides an item (treated mosquito netting) that has been shown to be highly effective in achieving its intended result (preventing malaria infection and death among vulnerable populations in developing countries), is consistently rated as one of the most reliably and verifiably effective charities, and has demonstrated that it can increase its output with additional funding (those might all seem like they would apply to any operating charity, but they sadly do not).

I guess it's a bit boring that I have no personal connection to this place other than having been a donor, but it seems to me these people are in more dire need than most of the other potential picks.

PMing for PayPal instructions now - thanks again for running this :)

Four entries, please.

Like @softchewy above, I'd be drawing for Alzheimer's Association (alz.org). I've watched this horrible disease destroy the lives of several people, including my wife's father who passed in 2009 after suffering for eight long years.... and currently my own mother (and her two sisters), all of whom have gotten progressively worse over the past three years. It is truly awful to watch, and very little can be done.

@softchewy and @BGinGA I want to jump in with your charities. I'll take two entries.

If I sell my Horse Shoes before this goes down and I win then I'll just hold a flip for current HS chip owners. If my set sells before this goes down and I win I will just have you ship these to the buyer of my set.

I like it! But your post is also pretty confusing, as both alternatives seems to be based on you selling your set before this raffle. Lol. Love your donating/gambly christmas spirit though(y)

I'm in the raffle no matter what. If someone buys my set before the raffle happens they will get this as an add on for free. This is only as a bonus if the set sells before the raffle. If the set doesn't sell before the raffle then I will do a flip for current HS owners and the winner can receive it on me as a Christmas present :) Still confusing, lol. Hopefully a little less confusing

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

No longer confusing at all, thanks! Merry christmas

I'm in for 2. The charity I'd like to donate to is the Susan G Komen for breast cancer research. My mom is a 3 time cancer survivor from this terrible disease so it is something that is important to me. She's been in remission now for 8 years since her last time and is on maintenance chemo now for the rest of her life. I'm thankful every day for the doctors and chemo drugs that they've come out with but there is still a long ways to go towards finding a cure.

Thanks all!

Really enjoy reading about all the charities we are all involved in!

I'll be updating OP today with the number of entries and adding the number ranges.

I think cut off will be midnight on Thursday.
