I'm introducing roulette for my rentals. The question I have is, how many chips do I need to properly run a game?

I'm acquiring non-denominated chips for the game, so I'd like to figure out how many, and how many colors I should have to run a proper game. It's always for funny money for staff parties.

Played a lot of roulette in casinos. A jam packed table is 6-7 tops. The standard amount for most people is $100 at a time. So that would be 700 chips in 7 different colors (100 each). To be safe I would do 200 of each color. Then I would get denominated chips if someone wins big.

I am toying with the idea of building a roulette table and during of all my research, this is what I determined as well. Plus further evidence is with the recent horseshoe sale of 7 different colors. I was lucky to get 1400+ for my set-up.

Question, what are you going to do for wheels?

I bought 120 of each color. 20 for the player and then a rack for payouts. I don't play it much for real money because the odds are so horrible, however I do like to watch. I've seen real casinos pay the big wins (straight number) in value chips rather than shove a whole rack of roulettes when someone bet three on a number.

So a hundred to handle normal payouts would probably work. That's still 700 chips on the table plus the value chips so it's a lot.

For my home parties I am probably going to change the rules a bit so people can come out ahead. Not sure just yet but I might do something like 00 means each player gets a $100 value chip and we spin again.

I'm curious to know what people think about wheels. I'm simply not spending $1,800 for a wheel that weighs hundreds of pounds. But if you look at the smaller "consumer" ones reviews are either awesome or say the items are a POS.

I had luck with this one from amazon...$18. Worth a shot in the dark. Obviously not a great wheel, but it seems fair. Not sure I want to even consider a $250 - $450 wheel without seeing it first. I don't know of any gaming shops in my area that has a selection of any wheels.

My other option was to use an online website who doesn't require a bet and just spin the wheel AND it keeps the history and stuff, which is helpful. For my home spun wheel I made an excel spreadsheet which only requires a number to be keyed in and it speaks, charts and records it in a history. I display it on a monitor and it works well. Oh, the chips in that set are hilarious...the size of a dime!

When I played roulette, I'd usually buy in for 80 chips.
So I think manamongkids had it right - at least 200 chips per color and large chips. If the colors are a buck apiece, maybe a barrel of $25s and a few barrels of $5s.
At least that if you're playing for real money. If it's funny money I'm sure you could get away with less.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I'm doing a roulette fundraiser tonight actually with 5 colors and about 200-250 of each color. I'm going to see how that goes and adjust accordingly. Last time I did it, be it a year ago, I paid out denominated chips for big wins if I was low on chips. Good to know that I'm on the right track and I don't need a buttload, like 400 each or so.

I know my poker but the other games are much less familiar.

I have a roulette wheel that belongs to a friend of mine who lets me use it at my rentals. It's decent, it works. It's a 20" wheel.

6-7 colors. 250 would drive me crazy to deal on (OCD). 200 or 300 is standard. You'll need some value for colorups. Using value and non-value (roulettes) together in payouts is common. 80 non and a quarter on top for 3 straight ups etc.... my favorite game to deal.

So last night's event went well. I used CC Pharoah's and another random color of chips to use as the roulettes. I had between 200-300 of each color and 6 colors. I never ran out of any color but I was close at one point when the red chip player had the biggest payout of the night, resulting in a payout of 140. If I was low on chips, I could have just given them regular denom chips plus some more reds for betting.

I certainly want to upgrade to some roulette chips though, the CC pharoah's were confusing because they were denominated and my red chips were holgram dice chips which were very slippery and stacks kept falling over.

I made an insert to fit inside my poker table for the roulette layout but I think it's too small. It worked OK for last night but my chip area was cramped.

We also had blackjack and poker last night, 1 table of each. The blackjack players were so into the game that they kept playing until the very last minute we were booked until (12:30). They even started turning off the lights on us early so the players busted out their cell phones for lighting.

If I could get colors which look as different as possible it would be great. Sometimes the venues I work in are not well lit so they need to be easily recognizable from each other.

Cool - well when it comes to the 20 inch home market there's only really one or two on the market. You can find them with TPS, Amazon and a litany of other random sites. Those are the ones that reviews seem to run hot or cold on. Some say they're perfect for their intended use and others say they are a minefield of quality control issues. Thanks for the confirmation.

The wheel worked well. You can see that the part that spins is a little off axis, not enough to affect play. The ball got stuck on one of the diamonds once during the night and the ball landed on 4 black in the first 10 spins of the night, then didn't hit again for the rest of the night. It would be great to upgrade to the 30", but the 20" will do for now. Plus the 30" will just take up more space on the table.

My 31" wheel weighs a ton. One man could never handle it so It would be a lot tougher to move it on regular basis as you are doing. Food for thought

I've played a few games with 100 colored chips per person, and I'm going to bump it up. Not sure how much though, maybe 150 total per player.

Using denominated chips for big payouts works well to keep the game moving, especially when there's a lot of losing chips for the dealer to sort and restack in the bank. I see it as a balancing act between how many colored chips the players have to manage and how busy you want the dealer to be with maintenance after every spin.

I'm working on ideas as well to turn the house edge into a player edge. And why not! Reduces the potential for rebuys, and the more they play the more they will probably win. Sounds like a recipe for a night packed with energy and excitement!

Very nice table! What size is the table? 4'x8' I assume? And can you share any comments on your wheel choice?

@Steve5k I was thinking about implementing the en prison rule for 0 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_prison) because then I'll need moar chips, specifically some lammers. Best I can tell this would reduce the house odds to 2.36% so if I turned the 00 into a straight pay bonus like $25 or $100 and all bets remain it would probably tilt the scales to the player's favor.
