I have questions...

Aren't bears always "in the area" pretty much everywhere in Alaska?

Why is the sign set up on the road? Isn't that a traffic lane?

I'm not convinced that's a real sign. The kerning and letter-spacing make no sense for a hand-painted sign, which is what it would have been in the 1940s.

e.g.
* the huge weird gap between V and A in ADVANCE
* the N in ADVANCE is upside-down compared to IN
* all of the O's in SAILORS INTO HOTEL are weird in the same way (bottom left corner)

I had found the sign at an art & antiquity dealer that is a registered LAPADA dealer in the UK. Risking their membership selling a fake sign would be a terrible business practice.

The lettering being a stencil makes some sense as the source of the crappy kerning, though.
