Just received my first set of real clay chips. I ordered a sample set of Key West chips. Easy to order from their website and I figured I can finally see what the big woop is about these 'real' clay chips as opposed to China Clays.

I have mixed feelings however :(. I'm sad because I know how much money I'm going to be spending on real clay chips now! My wallet is already screaming ;). I'm happy because I realize I've been missing out big time!!!!

The old school look. The simple edge spots. The tasteful choice of colors. Easy to read denominations. Simple tasteful inlays. I am super satisfied and recommend you pick up a set. For all of the fence sitters ... there is no comparison to China Clays. Top notch. :)

Great chip!!! I briefly owned a cash set of these. The quarters and the one's were easily my favorites. I at least got them into play a few times before selling them.

The customer service from Key West is as good as the chips. If you go with a full set of these you will not be disappointed.

Thanks for the validation! I used to host a weekly small buy in tournament. Due to time constraints we decided small stakes cash game would be better. .05 / .10 and .25 / .50 depending on what folks wanted. Went from wal mart dice chips to a set of Pharaoh's club China clays. But now I'm thinking real clay Key West!

If I hosted a weekly, or even monthly cash game I would have kept my Key West chips. I can't justify having BCC Samurai Palace cash set, a Key West Cash set, and a custom Sunset cpc cash set. The Key West had to go.

Please buy a set, host lots of games, post a ton of pictures so that I can live through you :)

I will definitely oblige. Poker table has been a bit cold for a few months, but the guys are now expressing interest again. I think I might unload the Pharaohs to put some $$$ toward these beauties. :)

I'll also add that the sound of these puppies out does any China Clay I've handled. Nice and crisp.

These chips are better quality than the two casinos I usually play at!

Its tough to out do a cpc chip.

Placed your order yet? :)

Just wait until you see the colors - especially the edges - after you oil them. Those are still production-dry and dusty.

Most definitely! I can't wait to run out to Wal Mart to get some mineral oil for them! Pics will definitely be added for everyone's viewing pleasure :D

One of those chips is not like the others. Can you spot the difference?

(Note - there's nothing "wrong" with the chip or chips...just a slight difference.)

Yup, that's the one. There's a few other subtle details that are different on it, too, but someone would have to be intentionally looking for them to spot the differences. In regular play you'd never know.

Wow good catch! I just noticed that myself. I'm guessing this is a defect and not intentional. I wonder if this exists if you order a large set? Another thing I noticed is the $25,000 only has brass flakes in the edge spots. The rest of the chips have brass throughout the chip. Not sure if intentional or just production differences.

No, definitely not a defect. At some point the artwork was updated. Between chips manufactured in two different locales and three different owners (and one of which can who probably outsourced the inlay production), it's not surprising that slight updates would have been made from company to company. But no, it's absolutely not a defect.

Oh gotcha. It sounds like my samples probably came from different chip runs.

The 25K base color is DG peach which is unweighted thus no brass flakes. I believe it and the DG green spot on the 1K are the only unweighted colors in the set.

You know, I was checking my samples just now after your question and that $5000 chip doesn't match any color in my CPC sample set. I'm guessing it's orange? But it doesn't really match perfectly...it's darker but isn't DG orange cause it has flakes. I never would have guessed it was an orange chip just by looking at the $5000 on its own.

They are awesome chips and was just about to grab a bunch until I was "forced" to go customs.

The orange with green edge spot is the $25K. The chip to the right is the $5K. It's closer to a light brown in real life with a chocolate edge spot. Very pretty / classy chips.

You are correct.

Counting the original run in 2004, there have been at least nine runs of Key West chips from all three versions of the company. Another order was placed last October and is still pending. The inlay artwork has been kept by the various versions of the company, not here at my business.

The original run of Key West chips was in 2004 at old ASM, Portland. Josh Shore of Apache Poker Chips came up with the original idea, and J5 did the inlay. Originally, there were nine denominations. I have no idea how many chips were produced, but there were enough chips for Josh to sell them for seven years before he started running low on chips.

I bought the design for Key Wests from Josh in July, 2011, so I could make more Key West with ASM and Jim B for myself and others who had them. Since then, I added the 5-cent chip, the $2.50 chip and the $25,000 chip using J5's original inlay design.

We made more chips with each version of the company. The only denomination we haven't made after 2012 is the NCV chip, so if you have an NCV chip, it's from the original run. And all the blue $1 chips were made by Classic Poker Chips after March, 2014, so the blue $1s are the latest design.

I have no idea who made the changes or if they are a byproduct of software updates in the program that produces the digital image. It's possible the change happened at old ASM, Portland, but I doubt it. I did not order any changes to the inlays except to change the denomination number when we added a new denomination.

If the changes happened in Las Vegas, I can safely rule our Red Ott, since he was the complete opposite of a computer guy -- and since the changes look good, not messed up.

So if the inlays were changed at Old ASM Portland, Jim B would have done it or known. And if the changes were made in Las Vegas, they are sure to have been done by Michael Daumbach. Either way, I'm fine with that, and consider it a contribution to the chip's history.
