The longer I'm here, the more I find stuff I like (and want). I've been thinking of a Cali inspired set and how I'd implement that into something meaningful for me, a guy who lives on the east coast of Australia.

I pitched this design to Cratty and Johnny5 but both guys are fairly backed up with work and Johnny hasn't been on the forum for a month so I'm putting it out to the world...or at least this forum.

The Background Stuff to set the scene;

Lake Kawana is a man made lake on the Sunshine Coast and is the heart of a relatively new precinct that is continuing to take shape as we speak. There are many low to medium rise apartment buildings being built both on the west side along the lakefront (the suburb of Birtinya where I live) and also along the beachfront to the east which is known as Bokarina.

The view from my balcony takes in the lake in the foreground, which is surrounded by a walking path, the sprawling suburb of Wurtulla beyond that and lastly the ocean.
The lake, being man made, does have a hard edge for the most part and is tidal too so, when the tide is low, there is a lip or wall to it. There are a few very tall Norfolk Island Pines along the beach as well as a fair share of Alexander Palms peppered about the place. For the last few years there has always been a construction crane on the skyline out there somewhere too.

I get a magnificent sunrise over the beach and often catch glimpses of the cruise ships and container vessels crawling along the channel out of the port in Brisbane before heading out to sea. Unfortunately, today was overcast so I saw none of either when I took these photos. :)

The Inlay Design;

My immediate inspiration was the Dunes Hotel & Country Club where;
  • the putting green and creek (?) is replaced with the lake and path,
  • the mounds and trees replaced with the pines, palms and buildings,
  • the flag is replaced by a construction crane, and
  • the font would be something similar to the Dunes font.

And this is one of the crudest sketches imaginable to give you an idea of what was in my head. Nothing in the sketch is set in concrete; I was just trying to include all the design elements to loosely represent what I see.

I'll transcribe my chicken scrawl for you;
  • Rising sun
  • Construction tower/crane
  • Medium high rise apartments
  • Norfolk Island pines
  • Palm trees
  • Low hills (basically dark green to represent vegetation)
  • Blue lake
  • Walking path (grey) or Grassed area (green)
  • Sand colored lip to the lake (optional 'red' part but may make it too messy)
  • Sunshine Coast, Queensland (or Qld if space is limited) in lieu of Las Vegas, Nevada
I'm an amateur designer at best and this art needs work but this is something I came up with over the weekend on Photoshop. I think the blue and green are probably a bit too dark.

The Chip Design;

I looked at sets like Camino Casino, Circus Circus, Lake Elsinore and Huntington Park for example, but for the most part the inspiration for the Kawana set was the Caminos. Denoms would be 25c / $1 / $5 / $20 / $100 I reckon but I'd be interested to hear your feedback on a 10c / 50c / $2 / $10 / $50 breakdown as I doubt the hundos will get much felt time.

So, after all that, I'm hoping that maybe someone with mad Illustrator skills might like to take on the design challenge. I'd really love this design to be on a table topper, dealer button, and all the other things that make a great card room.

Thank you all for reading this far and I appreciate your feedback and/or critique.

Cheers,
Wade

I like your 5 and I’m a sucker for a Cali set.

It’s a fantastic chip without exceeding the denom (cost) if I’m not mistaken.

There are a few finer points to the set. For the day glow yellow I think the day glow peacock is too much contrast, and the tiger clashes with the pink.

I also feel that the black is too much as well, I really think the charcoal is a better color.

You should get a sample set for the CPCs before you order, so you can validate or invalidate my observations

That's a fair observation @Machine, thanks for that. I didn't really compare the colours together as a set; rather in isolation.

Notes:
  1. Swapped the DG Peacock and Light Blue between the 1 and the 5.
  2. DG Tiger removed and DG Peach moved from the 100 to the 1.
  3. Charcoal replaces Black on the 20.
  4. DG Peach replaced by DG Saturn on the 100.

I agree that the Light Blue and Charcoal soften the contrast.
