Tourney Last rebuy and add-on (1 Viewer)

I get that too. 1/2 now and 1/2 later does have it's roots in stack preservation. However, all will take that second stack, which puts me right back to my original point. Everybody will want that extra stack.

I could see an instance maybe where at the end of the rebuy period, you could exchange your reload chip for cash and some people would take it for a "greater ROI". However, it seems mighty unlikely.

Yeah, you'd think so, but it's simply not true. Only about 25% of my players take the chips up front, and in big $$ pro events, it's an even smaller percentage.

And as stated earlier, it seems to have no relationship to win/cash rates. :confused

...but they still take the chips, right?

I played at Sams Town last week in a tourney that was a $55 T15,000 that had a $15 addon for 5000 chips. Nobody at my table took it until they were felted or the addon/rebuy period ended.

We play a variation, starting stack is T10000, with an extra 5000 chip. The 5000 is not live unless you lose your first 10000, or at the start of the second hour.
So if you suffer a bad beat early, you still have a half rebuy to play socially.
If you do well in the first hour then it’s just an addon.

You pay for the whole thing up front, so it saves the hassle of the host having to mess with rebuys, it lets people play socially without an incentive to shove stupid cause your short, and it doesn’t favor deep pockets over skill/luck.

But they took it.

The point was made to me that you should not take it, because you are spending more money. I postulate that it is always better to have more chips, unless the $ to chip ratio for the add-on is lousy.

You can debate that it is better to wait, that is fine - its a strategy decision. But my point is, if the rebuy is just an add-on, you almost always take the add-on.

If everybody is taking the add-on, you may as well charge for it right up front and give the player a "reload" chip. You can use this when felted (thus protecting yourself from being eliminated by a cooler/bad beat), when short stacked (to give more fold equity), or at the beginning. Moose and Send suggest the reload/rebuy can only be used when below (Moose) or at/below (Send) the starting stack.

In those cases, I suggest the immediate reload. You dont want to be up T100 above starting stack at the end of the rebuy period and not have the option to use the reload.

To sum up:
  • If you can reload any time, reload at your leisure - but you will usually want to spend that money for more chips
  • If you can only reload at or below a given stack size, you should exercise that option while the window is open.

If everybody is taking the add-on, you may as well charge for it right up front and give the player a "reload" chip.

That would make for an interesting dynamic, especially as you get toward the end of the reload period. Other options are 1 rebuy or 1 rebuy+1 addon. All of these are cool but not the same as an unlimited rebuy tourney. Part of why I like an unlimited rebuy is because it lets you play loose/spewy/gambley without risk of getting KO the tourney. Also can build up a large prizepool off a relatively smaller buyin.

When I first started hosting, I allowed unlimited rebuys. We had one very aggressive player that would play very loose/spewy/gambley. I didn't have a problem with that, but my other players began to. The cost of "a night out" was being run up by one player, and other players were no longer attending. So we instituted the one rebuy rule, which became known in the club as the "Robbie Rule".

Robbie no longer attends, but the group has grown since then. I miss Robbie, but sometimes you have to make a change for the good of the group.

If your player base is mostly just having a fun night out that just so happens to involve poker, then limiting rebuys are better.
If your player base is mostly competitive poker players, unlimited rebuys (during the rebuy period of course) is the better option.
