hi,

I'm considering purchasing an existing oval table top, with dimensions 76" x 40". Currently, the table has no legs, and I need to source them. I need the table to be portable, such that it can be stored in a basement room and carried up a flight of stairs for setting up.

As far as I can see, the options are 1) screw-on legs, or 2) folding legs.

I'd like to know, what are people's experiences with folding table legs vs. screw-on legs? Or, is there another option which can be relatively quickly set up and easily transported?

thanks

Best option imo is to add small centering blocks under the tabletop and use a readily-available plastic table with folding legs underneath. The blocks will keep the tabletop from moving when on top of the table.

A common 5' x 3' or 60" x 30" table should fit underneath with nothing protruding. They are available in either solid or folding versions for about the same cost as just a set of folding legs.

The folding versions don't take up much room, and the tabletop itself doesn't gain the weight of adding folding legs. Bonus is you end up with a spare portable table that can also be used for hobbies, laundry, dining, etc.

As @BGinGA said. We have a guy in our group that has 3 table tops that he uses the white plastic tables as the legs.

He transports them to people's houses all the time when an extra table is needed. Cuts down on weight and they stack easier when not in use.

I'm doing the same here. I had a 6' long plastic table I planned to use, but the corners would have stuck out from my oval topper (44"x78"). I found a used 30"x60" folding table for $20, which was a lot less than a new set of legs, and my wife can use it for scrapbooking, etc. I also made a ping pong table topper out of 3/4" MDF to go on the folding table.

Thanks a lot for these suggestions. I hadn't considered this, but I think you're right - by this solution I could have both a portable work table and a solid base for my poker table. Moreover, the base table might be found used at a reasonable price. I'm on it. :D

Plus you can play ping pong! My son has really gotten into it. (y)
