Wtf?? I was always told that FLVs were leaded. I never weighed them myself. This could be the largest PCF cover up ever!
Hope I didn't burst your bubble
If you like them, that is all that matters.
As I told someone else when they found out their Lakeshore Inn $1 chips probably weren't leaded; nothing has changed with the chips, they look, sound and feel the same as they did yesterday.
Textured inlays are not really a good indicator of lead.. they are an indicator of age (older than x) which in turn may infer they were made during the leaded era.
Year of manufacture is a much better indicator, but still not a guarantee (and of course there are varying levels of additives, lead and otherwise, depending on the chip).
Unfortunately, there is some confirmation bias around "leaded" chips.
IMHO the real benefit of lead/weighting is weight (obviously) and sound.
I'm not claiming to be any authority on the subject, but I have tens of thousands of 39mm Paulson chips from all different eras in weights ranging from ~8g to ~12g.
I am very certain (and have done this myself) that if someone could only feel the rolling edge of a mint condition chip without seeing, handling, shuffling or feeling the weight, they wouldn't fair better than a coin flip at guessing if a Paulson chip was leaded or unleaded.
Example -
RPC Pri $1 vs RVCL $1 - as much as I tried (and maybe wanted there to be) there was no discernible texture difference when just feeling the rolling edge of a barrel. Honestly, they feel and sound nearly identical when shuffling, etc.
Not saying some chips don't feel different, but that is usually more due to break-in/wear. YMMV
None of this is set in stone and you'll see all different opinions.
..probably should have posted this in the controversial thread
Leaded?
Leaded
Unleaded?
10.1g - 10g (textured inlay) - 9.1g (textured inlay)
Big fan of The Nugget $5.
Do I wish they were closer to official casino weight
.. sure, but I'm not getting rid of them.
