Can someone explain how the league decided how to match up the semi-finals? Was this pre-determined at the start of the year or was there some sort of 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 ranking by way of season points?

The Islanders were underdogs to the Penguins and the Bruins... those series worked out pretty well.
@Marc Hedrick's boss got a pretty good number on taking the Islanders to win the Cup after Game 3 of the Bruins series (when the Islanders were down 2-1).
Also, this year, we didn't win game 7 and have to fly from Toronto to Edmonton the same night and play the next night in Game 1 against the Lightning, so I am expecting a closer game than Game 1 last year.

The Lightning were arguably underdogs to the Panthers and Hurricanes too.
Both teams are well rested and I don’t expect a high scoring game - something like 3-1 Lightning with an empty netter.
I will be in Las Vegas for games 3 and 4 of the series and look forward to watching the games in a nice sports book - maybe the new one at Circa.
I may even try to go to the Vegas/Montreal game 2 on Wednesday.

Circa's sportsbook may have an entrance fee. It was our original plan to stay there Mon-Wed, but we killed that because of outrageous fees (parking, resort, pool, & sportsbook).
Meanwhile, here in Pahrump (passing through to Death Valley), the Golden Knights are at -700

I want to say the Canadiens were +2-something, Like +215 or +225.
It wasn't enough to take a flier on the game. I think the Knights will win the series, but won't sweep. With deep enough odds, I'd put money on it, but this wasn't it.
