I have no horse in the race, but that is not at all how the rule works unless I don't understand it. Here is what Wikipedia says about the rule:The game wasn't decided by poor officiating - those players were involved in a line change and were well behind the play. They had no influence on the goal.
Too many men on the ice is a bench penalty in ice hockey called when a team has more than the legal number of players (six, including the goalie, if not already short handed) on the ice at one time. ... In the NHL, substitution is allowed when the outgoing player is within 5 feet (1.5 m) of their bench.
Based solely on the still shot in this thread and based on what Wikipedia says (not me) the rule seems clear to me. They had 5 men on the ice, but should have only had 4 = easy penalty or no penalty = poor officiating.
Maybe TB wins anyway, maybe not. Just my 2c that it is too bad games get decided like that and especially in a game 7 to go to the Stanley Cup.
