Line on copying work (3 Viewers)

If there is a set you really like, don’t copy it. Study it, and figure out what makes it work for you.

Then apply those principles to choosing your own base colors, spots and inlay—not copying another’s idea, but using it as a guide to how to think about design.

For example, most Paulson and CPC colors have a close cousin.Try shifting each base and spot color to the next closest match, and see what you get. Adjust as needed.

Or (going a level deeper) consider what makes a certain color combo “pop,” or what is subtle about it.

Is the base is much darker than the spots? Are most of the colors super-saturated? Or that each chip’s colors are a similar “family” in terms of hue or saturation or value?
